Box Score Williamsburg, KY – Jahi Hinson recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds to notch his third career double-double and lead the 15
th-ranked Patriots to a 79-70 win over IU Southeast Tuesday night on Randy Vernon Court. With the win, the Patriots improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Grenadiers fall to 0-1.
Cumberlands opened the game with
Tevin Olison connecting with
Jahi Hinson for a three-pointer to give UC an early lead. The duo of Hinson and Olison combined for the Patriots first ten points of the game, while an
Austin Hall layup gave Cumberlands a 12-4 advantage three minutes in. IU Southeast responded with ten unanswered points to take the lead, however,
Steven Fitzgerald drained a jumper to even the score with 14:35 remaining. There were four lead changes and four ties over the next seven minutes before Olison connected from long range and found
Isaiah Payton for a jumper to give Cumberlands a 32-26 advantage. UC extended their lead to seven points, however, the Grenadiers closed out the half on a 9-2 run to even the score at 38-38.
Josh Williams and Hinson combined to score the first five points of the second half to put the Patriots back in front. The two teams went back-and-forth trading baskets over the next seven minutes until Fitzgerald found
Lamar Harris for a layup to give UC a 56-53 lead. Three-pointers by Olison and
Deng Mayot coupled with buckets from Fitzgerald and Harris extended Cumberlands advantage to 66-59 midway through the second half. The Patriots utilized a 5-2 run, spanning three minutes, to take a 10-point lead 71-61 IU Southeast tried to mount a comeback, however, Williams and Payton drained three's on consecutive possessions to halt the comeback. Hinson added another field goal in the final minutes for the 79-70 final.
In addition to the double-double, Hinson added four assists and two steals, while Olison notched a game-high 27 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Fitzgerald chipped in nine points and eight rebounds, while Mayot grabbed 10 boards to go along with five points.
The Patriots will return to the court Tuesday, November 3, when they host Milligan on Randy Vernon Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live stats available
