Patriots Soccer Victorious in Season Opener

Columbia, MO- In their season opener, the Patriots women's soccer team tallied a pair of goals to take down the Columbia College Cougars. Selena Barnett and Alanna Skinner scored goals to defeat the Cougars 2-0. The Patriots move to 1-0 on the season, while the Cougars conclude their fall season with an overall record of 7-2.

The first half of the match started with both teams swapping shots until the Patriots moved the ball downfield to their attacking zone. The Cougars defense tried to clear the ball out of their box, but instead launched the ball into the crossbars of the goal. Barnett found the loose ball and tapped it into the back of the net to give UC the 1-0 lead with 7:17 remaining in the half. In the waning minutes of the half, Moa Widjeskog took a shot on goal that was stopped short by the Cougars goalkeeper. UC went into the locker room up 1-0 on Columbia.

As the second half got underway, the Cougars crossed the ball to the far side of the Patriots box to set up a shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper, Laura Vogt, dove for the ball to keep Columbia scoreless. In the 65', Sarah Hammerstone found Barnett upfield to get a pass off to Skinner in front of the cage. Skinner kicked the ball past Columbia's keeper, into the net to extend Cumberland's lead to two. Battling for possession, the Cougars made their way downfield before being fouled by the Pats with 3:48 remaining. Earning a free kick just outside of the box, Columbia sent a pass towards the middle of the field where Jenna Rockwell slid to block the ball from CC's offense. The two teams traded possession until the final buzzer sounded, giving UC the 2-0 victory.

Cumberlands competes again this Saturday, November 14 when they travel to Georgia to take on Dalton State. Kickoff is set for 4pm, live stream will be available here and live stats will be available here.
