Third Quarter Surge Pushes Pats Past the Royals

Box Score Williamsburg, KY- The Cumberlands women's basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat Johnson 99-68 on Friday night. With the win, the Patriots move to 3-0 ahead of their conference debut next week, while the Royals drop to 1-5 on the year.
 
The game started slow, as both teams swapped possession until Johnson scored the first bucket at the 9:02 mark. The Patriots finally found their offensive momentum after Addison Wilson sunk a shot from behind-the-arch to put UC up 7-6. Cumberlands' defense took control of the final minutes of the first half, earning no fouls and holding Johnson to 38% from the field.
 
The Patriots opened the second quarter with buckets in back-to-back possessions to advance their lead over the Royals to 25-14. The scoring attack continued as UC went on a 10-2 run midway through the quarter. A long three-pointer from Kaylee Mathis took the Pats into the locker room with a solid 44-31 lead over the Royals.
 
Rick Reeves' offense came alive in the third quarter, as Carla Covane and Silvia Veloso each sank buckets in the first thirty seconds of play. On the ensuing possession, Covane stole the ball from Johnson, that set up a pair of shots from Reagan Begole. The Pats finished the quarter scoring 37 points, shooting 57% from the field, and going 10-14 from the stripe.
 
Up 81-45 at the start of the fourth quarter, Abbey Estes pulled up from behind the arch to add to the Patriots' lead. Raegan Hubbard and Destiny Haworth scored on consecutive possessions to push the score to 88-52 ahead of the Royals. In the final minutes of play, the Pats added six more points to their lead, coming from Mathis, Olivia Federle, and Allyson Anderson to earn the 99-68 victory
 
Channing Lewis led the team in scoring, tallying 15 points, three rebounds, and a pair of assists. Shelby Moore also chipped into the Patriots' success with four points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Veloso recorded eight points and four steals.
 
The Patriots play again next week in their conference-opener as they host the defending regular season champions, Campbellsville. The game will take place on November 19, with tipoff set for 5:30pm. Live video will be available here, while live stats are available here.
