Evenly Matched Game Between Cumberlands and Dalton State Ends in 1-1 Tie

Dalton, GA – The Patriots played another 2019 NAIA postseason team facing Dalton State College on the road. Both teams lost in the opening round last season which proved to show how evenly matched their contest would be. Saturday night's game played the full 90 minutes plus two periods of overtime, but the teams ended in a 1-1 tie.

UC took the lead in the 29th minute from the right foot of Alejandro Gonzalez. The Patriots had a counterattack that sent the ball to Milan Stojanovic on the left flank. Stojanovic took his dribble inward and crossed a ball to Gonzalez who needed just one touch to bury the ball in the lower right corner giving him his first goal of the season.

Dalton State almost tied the game up less than two minutes later but Akililu Zambataro made a point blank save protecting the near corner to hold the 1-0 lead. He made four more saves in the first half to keep the Roadrunners off the scoresheet.

Nathan Hart entered the game for the first time as a Patriot late in the second half and remained in goal the rest of the game. The senior stayed busy saving three shots in six minutes midway through the second half including a diving safe to stop a curving free kick ball in the bottom right corner.

The Roadrunners would find the net in the 78th minute to tie the game at one. Dalton State earned a throw-in on the right side and sent a long throw into the 18-yard box that got redirected near Hart. Unfortunately, Hart was pushed off balance by a Dalton State attacker who then headed the ball into goal.

The remaining minutes in regulation had UC with three corner opportunities, but unable to get a shot off in each of them resulting in the game going to overtime.

The Patriots had the momentum to start the extra time, rattling off a shot from Stojanovic that barely went wide of the frame. Right after the ball went out of play, UC had to finish the game a man due to a red card in the 98th minute.

Dalton State seized the one-man advantage with two shots in the final two minutes, but Hart was able to keep them out of the net and UC in the game.

The second overtime period was controlled by the Roadrunners who had two more shots bringing their game total to 25 with 13 on goal. The Patriots did have the best chance in both overtime periods. Stojanovic dribbled the ball down the left side crossing into Marco Muca who sent a one touch shot inches wide of the goal post.

Cumberlands ended the game having ten shots putting two of them on frame. Zambataro and Hart combined for 12 saves to hold Dalton State to a single goal.

The game gives UC a 0-2-1 record and Dalton State is now 3-0-1. Cumberlands will finish their fall season with their rescheduled match against West Virginia Tech on November 20th starting at 5 pm in Beckley, WV. The game will be livestreamed here and live stats will be available here.
