Box Score Pulaski, TN – Tevin Olison and
Deng Mayot combined for 43 points and 15 rebounds, however, it wasn't enough as the Patriots men's basketball drop a road contest 90-85 to Martin Methodist Saturday afternoon. With the win the RedHawks improve to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 6-1 overall and 1-1 against the MSC.
UC opened the game strong getting buckets from Mayot,
Jahi Hinson, and Olison to take an 8-0 lead three minutes into the game. The two teams traded baskets before Martin Methodist went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 12-11 with 11:14 remaining.
Austin Hall and Olison combined for UC's next six points extending the lead to 18-13 midway through the first half. The evenly-contested game continued over the next several minutes as Darrin Jenkins hit a lay-up in the paint to give the RedHawks their first lead 23-21 with 6:24 remaining. The lead changed three times over the course of the next three minutes until Mayot converted a three-point play to put UC in front 31-28. Cumberlands closed out the first half on a 9-0 run, capped off by an Olison three-pointer as time expired, to take a 40-30 lead into the break.
The Patriots struck first in the second half with a pair of free throws, however, the RedHawks went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 44-40, four minutes in. Mayot and Olison quickly extended UC's lead by to eight points and a couple possessions later
Josh Williams connected with
Austin Hall for a three to make it 51-45 with 14:15 remaining. The two teams continued their back-and-forth trading baskets until
Lamar Harris jumper gave Cumberlands a 63-54 lead midway through the second half. Over the nexzt few minutes Williams netted six straight Patriots points to keep UC's lead at nine points, 71-62, with 7:41 remaining. From that point Martin Methodist went on a 12-3 run to even the score at 74-74, however, Olison found Mayot for a layup to put UC back in front.
Josh Williams converted a three-point play to make it 79-74 with 2:51 remaining. From that point Martin Methodist closed out the game on a 16-6 run for the 90-85 final.
Olison finished with 22 points and five rebounds, while Mayot notched a double-double with 21 points and ten boards. Williams chipped in 16 points, while Harris finished with 11 points.
The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, December 12, when they host West Virginia Tech in a non-conference game at Randy Vernon Court. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. with live stats available
