Although getting off to a slow start, the Cumberlands women found their momentum as
Hannah Lawson connected with Douglas to hit a field goal, putting UC on the board. The Patriots got their first lead of the half as
Raegan Hubbard pulled in a rebound and put it back up to give UC a 14-13 advantage. The Pats held the Golden Bears to 43% from the field as the first quarter closed, WVU Tech up 24-23.
Â
Cumberlands got off to a hot start in the second quarter as
Silvia Veloso and
Carla Covane went 4-4 on free throws before Douglas drained a three from far to put the Pats up 30-27 early on. In the next minute, the Patriots scored seven points capped off by another Douglas three-pointer to extend their lead to 37-29 at the 7:17 mark. The Golden Bears began mounting a comeback but back-to-back buckets from
Lillie Hall cut the run short with just minutes to play in the quarter. A clutch two-pointer from
Shelby Moore in the final seconds of the half sent the Patriots to the locker room up 45-43.
Â
Not wasting anytime to get the third quarter going, C. Covane put up a bucket just 12 seconds in to give UC a four-point advantage. With the Golden Bears chasing the Pats' lead,
Reagan Begole won a defensive rebound and looked up the court for a long pass to Veloso. Veloso hit Lawson just outside the arch to sink a three, extending Cumberlands' lead to 55-51 with 6:23 remaining in the third. UC finished the quarter shooting 57% from the field and held WVU Tech to their lowest scoring period of the game.
Â
Opening the final quarter of play up 71-60, the Patriots struggled to defend the ball as the Golden Bears climbed their way back into a lead with 6:23 left to play. Consecutive baskets by Douglas and
Olivia Federle got UC back on track, but still down 76-75. Douglas snagged a rebound on the ensuing possession to break her single-game rebounds record with seven, before following that up with a go-ahead bucket. With 2:23 remaining in the game,
Channing Lewis found Lawson for a three to put UC back in the lead, 84-81.
Â
As the clock dwindled down to :09, WVU Tech hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 86 apiece. Sprinting down court, Lawson found Begole inside the paint for a quick basket with less than one second on the clock. Calling a timeout, the Golden Bears planned for a speedy shot from the near corner but a block by Lewis denied the shot and sealed the victory for the Patriots 88-86.
Â
Putting down 17 points and leading the team, Douglas recorded her second-straight game with more than 15 points, complimented by nine rebounds to set a new career-high. Both Lawson and Veloso added 14 points and six assists, with a combined seven rebounds. Freshman Hall had her highest-scoring game of the season, tallying 10 points and shooting 67% from the field.
