Patriots Avenge Early Season Loss With Win Over Georgetown at Home

Williamsburg, KY – Patriots women's basketball got back to its winning ways on Thursday afternoon, defeating Georgetown 73-63 on Randy Vernon Court. The win improves the Patriots to 5-5 in conference play, moving to 18-6 overall while the Tigers fall to 4-8 in the MSC and 13-12 overall.
 
Carla Covane led the offensive attack for the Patriots, matching her season high of 23 points on 9-13 from the field. Hannah Lawson put up her third straight double-digit scoring performance, dropping 18 points and grabbing five rebounds. Silvia Veloso managed 11 points while Reagan Begole finished just shy of a double-double with nine points, nine rebounds.

The opening three minutes of the first quarter were played within two points, as both teams headed into the final 6:30 minutes tied 6-6. Lawson drained a triple at the 6:28 mark that jump started a 13-0 run from the Patriots that included another trey for Lawson as well as buckets from Carla Covane, Silvia Veloso, and Abbi Douglas. The Tigers would make up some ground, going on a 7-2 run over the next few minutes yet the Patriots held on to lead 20-15 at the end of the first.

Once again, the opening minutes of the second quarter were played relatively even, with the Patriots outscoring the Tigers 6-5 to make it 26-20 with 6:13 to go. In the next two possessions, Carla Covane managed buckets in the paint to give the Patriots a 30-21 lead, their largest of the ballgame. Begole tacked on the last field goal for UC, draining a baseline jumper with 4:19 to go.  Despite a series of missed opportunities at the free throw line, the Patriots held on to a 34-27 lead headed to halftime.

Begole splashed both free throws to open the third, followed by another three by Lawson that put the Patriots up 39-29. Veloso added another field goal and a pair of free throws in the next minute to put the Patriots up 43-29 with 7:22 to play. With 4:07 to go, UC remained ahead by 11 before Carla Covane managed another bucket on the inside to make it 47-34. In the final 2:30, Hannah Lawson drained a pair of buckets as the Patriots headed into the quarter up 55-41.

Carla Covane scored four points on two buckets in the paint over the first four minutes of the final period, as the Patriots led 59-47 with 6:23 to go. The Patriots next basket game by way of a Jasmine Flowers three pointer with 3:49 to go, making it 63-55. The Tigers mounted a 4-2 run to make it a three possession game at 65-59. The Patriots hung on in the final minute to win 73-63 after four free throws from Lawson and three from Begole.

The Patriots shot 40% from the field on 23-57, while going just 4-16 from three for 25%. Georgetown claimed the rebounding edge by a 31 to 21 count.
UC will return to action Saturday, February 15, as they travel to Crestview Hills to take on the Saints of Thomas More. Tip-off from Connor Convocation Center is slated for 2PM.
