Oneida, TN – UC Softball opened day one of the Bear Creek Tournament splitting their results. Game one went to the Patriots who defeated Asbury College 4-3, but then dropped game two to Taylor University 5-3.
The offense was led by
Madison Huber collecting four hits in six plate appearances. Two of her hits were extra bases including a home run, the only player on the three teams to do so. Huber also led the team with four RBI, earning two each game.
Maddie Sickau knocked in two RBI from a pair of hits, all coming in game two. Sickau was one of four players to have a double over the pair of games.
Kaci Goedde had an impressive showing today as the the only pitcher to appear in both game throwing 4.2 innings. Goedde only gave up two runs from 19 batters improving her ERA to a team best 3.82
GAME 1: CUMBERLANDS WIN OVER ASBURY, 4-3
UC got out to a one run lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to an RBI single from Huber. The Harrison, OH followed that up with a double to left field that scored
Taylor Green in the fourth inning. After Huber advanced to third and eventually scored from two wild pitches.
Asbury battled back to tie UC in the fifth, but the Patriots would up their offense in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Katie Cheeseman earned herself a leadoff walk and had head up base running advancing to second, tagging up from a fly ball in foul territory. Cheeseman would advance from a fielder's choice when
Jenna Howell stepped to the plate for the first time in the game. Howell launched a ball to deep right field earning herself an RBI double.
A three up, three down inning in the top of seventh secured the victory for UC, winning 4-3.
GAME 2: RV TAYLOR DEFEATS CUMBERLANDS, 5-3
After Asbury scored one run, the Patriots once again scored in the second inning from the bat of Huber. The sophomore picked up her second home run of the season sending the ball over the left center field fence.
Taylor got out to a 3-1 lead in the fifth and UC once again answered back with a run of their own. Sickau sent a ball up the middle to score
Hailey Wood.
Emily Jasper got the rally going in the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to left center. Sickau once again rose to the occasion and earned another RBI for Cumberlands when she sent a ball to deep center field giving UC back-to-back doubles.
The rally would fall short and UC would lose the game 5-3.
Softball will be back on the diamond for day two of the Bear Creek Tournament tomorrow. The team will face both Grace College and Webber at 12 PM and 4 PM respectively.
