Lexington, KY - The 13
th-ranked UC men's tennis team headed north to Lexington, KY on Friday afternoon to take on the Midway Eagles. The Patriots won all nine matches for the seven point sweep; their third sweep in their last four matches. With the win the Patriots improve to 4-2 on the year.
The competition opened with the doubles matches, as the pair of
Martin Barbier and
Eric Banoub won a close match to David Alfaro and Shawn Tran 6-4 in the #1 doubles spot.
Anthony Kwok and
Luis Montull secured the doubles point in a 6-2 victory, while
Jan Dietrich and
Mattis Le Montagner won 6-2, clinching the clean slate in doubles play.
Leading the Eagles 1-0 headed into singles play, nationally-ranked Barbier made it 2-0 after defeated Juilian Lopez 6-2, 6-4 in the #1 position. Montull and Le Montagner got off to quick starts in both of their singles matches, winning 6-4 and 6-3 respectively. The competition got tighter as both men had to go beyond six points to claim victory. Montull and Le Montagner each won 7-5 against their competition in the #2 and #3 slots. With the victory secured 4-0,
Anthony Kwok began his match in the #4 spot and continued the sweep winning 6-0, 6-0.
Sjoerd Nijssen defeated Midway's Steven Knowles in the #5 singles match 6-2, 6-0 while
Jan Dietrich completed Cumberlands' domination with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
In the victory, several Pats extended their winning streaks. The doubles team of Barbier and Banoub improve to five straight wins, while Montull and Kwok have won four straight doubles matches. Individually, Nijssen and Barbier have each won four-straight singles matches.
The Patriots play again on Saturday, March 7, when they host Grace College for their first home match of the season. The first serve is set for 11am.
