Lexington, KY – The 17
th-ranked UC women's tennis team evened their record at 3-3 after defeating Midway 7-0 Friday morning at the Lexington Tennis Club. It marks the Patriots second sweep of the season as they knocked off Webber 7-0 earlier this year.
Cumberlands struck first taking the doubles point after winning all three matches.
Hana Shimeno and
Grace Steely got things started for UC with a 6-0 win at #3 doubles. Teaming up for the third time this season,
Tomomi Nagao and
Mikaela Fros defeated Annette Tran and Claire Smith 6-1 at #1 doubles to secure the point. The duo has improved to 2-1 on the year. At #2 doubles,
Tessa Gray and
Satsuki Mitani notched a 6-1 win to sweep the doubles point.
The Patriots didn't slow down in singles as Nagao remains undefeated by blanking Carly Poste 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles to extend the lead to 2-0. Shimeno followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #3 singles to improve to 3-3 on the year and give Cumberlands a 3-0 lead.
At #2 singles, Fros trailed 5-0 in the first set but rallied with seven straight points to win the set 7-5. Fros defeated Erin Byassee 6-0 in the second set to clinch the match for UC and extend their lead to 4-0.
Grace Steely and Satuski Mitani recorded 6-1, 6-0 wins at #4 and #5 singles, before
Johanna Beckmann closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Winter Bruggeworth at #6. Beckmann has now won two straight singles matches.
With tomorrow's match against Alice Lloyd being canceled, the Patriots will return to the court Friday, March 6, when they host LSU Alexandria in their home opener at the UC Tennis Courts. First serve is set for 2 a.m.
