Williamsburg, KY – Patriots baseball dominated Huntington University on Saturday, defeating the Foresters 11-2 in an 11 hit outing that included a trio of homeruns. The Patriots remain perfect with the win, moving to 16-0 while Huntington falls to 1-5 on the season.
The Patriots have made a habit of getting out in front early this season, outscoring opponents 31-1 in the first inning through 16 games. Saturday's contest was no different as UC put up three runs on three hits in the opening frame.
Ray Villanueva sent a double down the left-field line to lead off the inning, later scored by a two-run blast over the right-field fence by
Bryan Leef. On the next at-bat,
Alex Dominguez slugged a solo home run to left, putting the Patriots up 3-0.
The Foresters got two runs back in the top of the second, swinging out three hits to make it 3-2. In the top of the third, Patriots starter
Colton Easterwood tallied a trio of strikeouts, not allowing Huntington a hit. The Patriots hung a three spot in the bottom half of the third on a single hit by
Rolando Rodriguez and a pair of errors by the Foresters to extend their lead to 6-2.
The bottom of the fourth frame saw Leef's second homerun of the day as he sent a rocket to straightaway center, scoring
Pedro Nazario to make it 8-2. UC tallied their ninth run of the contest in the bottom of the sixth, made possible by a single to right by Dominguez.
UC got their final runs in the bottom of the seventh in an inning that included hits from
Andres Rolon and Villanueva.
Britton Elmore, pinch running for Rodriguez, scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop
Kevin Rolon for the first run. The second run came as Rolon advanced home by a walk from
Scott Simmons.
Patriots ace
Colton Easterwood earned the win in his fourth start of the season, going six innings allowing two runs on three hits while notching a season high nine strikeouts.
Hector Abreu,
Marcos Cuenca, and
Rollin Layton all pitched an inning in relief, giving up just one hit collectively.
The Patriots return to the diamond tomorrow, Sunday, March 1 to complete the series against Huntington with a nine-inning contest scheduled for 1 PM.
