Williamsburg, KY – Patriots men's basketball fell to Campbellsville Saturday afternoon in an intense second half shootout that saw the Tigers pull out the 70-65 win. The loss concludes the 2019-2020 regular season as the Patriots finish with a conference mark of 12-4, going 23-7 overall. The Tigers improve to 8-8 in MSC, wrapping up the season at 18-12.
Caleb Taylor showed out on senior night, finishing with a 12-point, 16-rebound double-double.
Tevin Olison tallied his 23
rd double digit scoring performance on the year, finishing with 22 points on 6-18 shooting from the field.
Jordan Griggs opened the first quarter with a deep three from the wing that was followed by a pair of free throws from Olison as the Patriots led 5-2 after the opening three minutes. Campbellsville's Richie Mitchell took the lead for Campbellsville with 15:30 to go, scoring on back-to-back possessions to make it 6-5. From there, Campbellsville went on a 5-1 run to take a 11-6 lead with 13:00 remaining before Olison finished on a put-back in the next possession to keep the game within three. Campbellsville extended their lead to eight before Griggs and Bri'An Brown splashed back-to-back threes around the 11:20 mark to bring the game within two.
With 8:40 remaining in the half, Hinson splashed a mid-range jumper to tie the game at 17-17. The Tigers held a four-point, 21-17 lead with 5:40 to go before Taylor made good on a put-back to make it a one possession game. Campbellsville mounted an 8-2 run over the next 2:30 to make it 25-19 headed into the final three minutes of the first half. The Patriots would manage a three pointer via Olison but would head into the halftime break trailing 27-22.
Ethan Snapp made good on a mid-range jumper at the 17:38 mark to tie the game at 28 all before both teams splashed threes on back-to-back possessions. With 13:53 left in the contest,
Jahi Hinson drilled a step-back triple to give the Patriots a 38-35 lead. Over the next six minutes, the game was knotted up five times as the teams went back and forth, struggling to maintain momentum.
With just under five minutes to play, Campbellsville mounted a 10-0 run that included four field goals and a pair of free-throws that gave the Tigers a 59-49 lead with 3:40 to play. The final minute saw the Patriots connect on a pair of free throws and a Hinson jumper to come within three with :20 remaining. Campbellsville would keep possession for the last minute, not allowing the Patriots a solid offensive opportunity, hitting a pair of free throws to close the game, claiming the 70-65 victory.
The Patriots managed 35 percent from the field on 23 of 64 shooting, while connecting on seven threes. UC narrowly outrebounded the Tigers, grabbing 38 boards to Campbellsville's 36.
The Mid-South Conference Tournament will be held Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 9
th with conference officials set to release schedule of play later this week.
