Â
Williamsburg, KY- The fourth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team fell to fifth-ranked Keiser in an overtime match on Saturday afternoon. Five Patriots netted a goal in the game, but the balanced offense came up short in the 8-7 loss. With the loss, UC falls to 1-1 before opening AAC play next week.
As soon as the first whistle blew, the top-five matchup lived up to the national hype as UC and Keiser went back and forth showcasing their defensive prowess. A caused turnover by
Jake Morgan gave
Christian Vanover the chance to pass the ball out to
Thomas Fogarty, who wrapped around the goal for a shot to the back of the net giving UC the early lead. Minutes later, the Seahawks found their offensive momentum and scored a trio of goals to make the score 3-1 with five minutes remaining. A pair of goals from Fogarty and Crouch tied the score at 3-3 as the first quarter came to a close.
The second quarter opened in similar fashion with neither team able to convert a shot for goals. After ten minutes of action, UC's
Anthony Gray found Crouch for his third goal of the game to give the Pats the 4-3 lead. The Patriot defense stood strong throughout the second quarter, not allowing a single shot on goal until the 2:14 mark when KU's Dylan Sharpe found the back of the net, tying the game at 4-4 headed into halftime.
A shot on goal by Vanover got the second half started, but it was Keiser that got on the scoreboard first giving them a 5-4 lead. UC's sophomore Gray responded with the equalizer shot to the upper right corner of the net with 6:43 remaining. UC continued the scoring momentum with a goal from
Dawson Coltran in the final seconds of the third quarter to give Cumberlands the 6-5 edge headed into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
A pair of goals for Keiser in the first few minutes gave the Seahawks a 7-6 lead before the freshman connection of
Holden Lowes and Vanover came in clutch. Lowes sent a pass across the box to Vanover who used his space to fire a shot into the back of the net, again tying the game at seven apiece. Back and forth action ensued but neither team was able to convert a shot, forcing the Patriot's second overtime this season.
Cumberlands won the opening faceoff in overtime, but a quick turnover gave Keiser possession. The Seahawks moved down field and, with 2:46 remaining, scored the golden goal to end the game. With the 8-7 victory, #5 Keiser remains undefeated.
The Patriots get back in action when they travel to North Carolina March 4 for their conference opener against Montreat. Face-off is slated for 5 p.m. Live video will be available
