Late Rally Comes up Short Against Second-Ranked Tigers

Williamsburg, KY – The UC women's basketball team opened the fourth quarter on a 16-2 run, however it wasn't enough as the Patriots fell 67-56 to second-ranked Campbellsville Saturday afternoon at Randy Vernon Court.  The Patriots finish the regular season with a 19-11 overall record and a 6-10 mark in conference play. 

Silvia Veloso led the way for UC with 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in the game.  Carla Covane added eight points and 13 rebounds, while Abbi Douglas and Vilma Covane finished with seven points apiece.

Reagan Begole got things started for the Patriots, draining a three-pointer to give UC an early 3-0 lead.  Silvia Veloso extended UC's lead with a steal and layup to make it 5-1 three minutes into the opening quarter.  Campbellsville went on an 14-0 run, spanning five minutes, before Carla Covane hit a field goal to cut the deficit to 15-7 with 1:50 left.   The Tigers added a bucket in the final seconds to give Campbellsville an 17-8 lead after the first quarter.

Campbellsville opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run, however, the Patriots responded as Veloso netted a bucket before finding Addison Wilson and Vilma Covane baskets to make it 25-16 with 2:49 remaining.    Veloso added another assist to Jasmine Flowers a minute later to bring UC within nine.  Vilma Covane and Addison Wilson combine for Cumberlands final five points to cut the deficit to 31-24 at the break.

The Tigers opened the third quarter on a 5-1 run, before Veloso sank UC's first field goal to make it 36-27 with 5:30 remaining.  Hannah Lawson connected with a three-pointer before the Tigers went on a 12-1 run over the next four minutes.  Veloso added a layup in the final seconds of the quarter to make it 50-33 Campbellsville heading into the final period.

Cumberlands opened the fourth quarter with eight straight points, including three's from Abbi Douglas and Rebecca Lewter to make it 50-41 with 8:03 remaining.  Carla Covane and Douglas combined for the Patriots next seven points to cut the deficit to 52-49 with 4:55 remaining.  Douglas connected with Vilma Convane to make it 57-51 before Campbellsville closed out the game at the free throw line for the 65-55 final.
