Offensive Power Lifts Patriots Over the Statesmen

Williamsburg, KY – In record-tying fashion, the fourth ranked Patriots notched 11 goals in the first quarter, which led to a victory over the William Penn Statesmen 23-9 Sunday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. This ties the current record of most goals scored in a quarter for the team when they put up 11 goals in the third quarter against Montreat on March 30, 2019. With the victory the Patriots improve to a record of 4-1 overall.

William Penn won the opening face-off but a quick shot and save from Will Settle gave the ball back to the Patriots. Recording six shots in the opening possession, the Pats capped it off with a goal from Dalton Smith at the 11:45 mark. Less than fifteen seconds later, UC scored again as Christian Vanover found Dawson Coltran, to set the score at 2-0. Cumberlands won the ensuing faceoff and Sam Collinson converted that possession into a goal for the Pats. Back-to-back goals from Thomas Fogarty gave UC the 5-0 lead before Whitten McCune sent a laser shot to the lower right hand corner of the net to extend the lead to six. After Fogarty scored another goal, notching a hat trick in the first half, the Statesmen finally responded with a score of their own with 28 seconds left in the first quarter. Three goals in 17 seconds closed out the first period of action including a buzzer-beater goal by Dylan Crouch with 0.9 seconds on the game clock. UC kept the offensive momentum rolling in the second quarter with a shot to the lower corner from McCune, improving the team's lead to 12-1. Holden Lowes and Fogarty got on the board before William Penn went on a five goal run to set the score at 14-6 headed into the break.

Cumberlands came out of the break ready to continue their domination on both ends of the field as they went on a six goal run and only allowed six shots and no goals from the Statesmen. Just Darley, Anthony Arseneault, Vanover, and Crouch all added goals to the Pats 20-6 lead. Jake Morgan caused turnovers that led to a pair of goals in the ensuing possession, while Dawson Coltran also caused a turnover which led to Darley's goal at the 4:20 mark. Opening the final quarter of play was William Penn's Patrick Brown with a goal to cut UC's to 20-7. Patriots and Statesmen swapped goals before freshman Preston Goodman recorded his first career goal with 3:05 remaining in the game. Flexing their explosive offense, the final score tallied to 23-9, the most goals scored in a game since UC put up 26 goals against point in their 2019 season opener.

In the victory, 11 Pats connected with the back of the net, while Fogarty, Crouch, and Vanover all notched hat-tricks. Two men record season-high numbers as Vanover tallied six assists and Morgan scooped 17 ground balls. Vanover's six assists ties the program record for most assists in a single game dating back to February 19, 2016 when Ryan Middleton put up the same numbers against Montreat.

The Patriots return to the field Tuesday, March 10, when they to host seventh–ranked Aquinas for their second top-ten matchup. The game is scheduled for 8pm with live video available here and stats available here.
