Babson Park, FL - After having two days off from games, the UC softball returned to action against RV Webber International University. The teams squared off in a doubleheader that saw Webber take both games, 2-1 and 9-5.
Sophomore,
Tori Malone led all hitters in the series with three RBIs and one of just two Patriots to hit for extra bases. Joining her in that category was
Madison Huber, who had a double and a single, the only multi-hit player for Cumberlands.
GAME ONE: WEBBER DEFEATS CUMBERLANDS, 2-1
Kaitlin White continues to be dominant in the circle for the Patriots. The freshman pitched 6.2 innings and gave up just two runs and four hits. White did have the help of her defense, since she only struck out one batter. UC was able to have five straight innings of retiring the side in order from the second inning until the sixth.
Webber went up 1-0 in the first inning off an error, but the Patriots would battle back and get runners on base from the second-fourth inning. UC was able to tie the game in the fourth inning from team offense.
Hannah Stephenson got a leadoff single and was moved over to second base from a sacrifice bunt off the bat of
Meryn Livingston. Huber got Stephenson to third base from an infield single. Then
Acacia Gray scored the senior with a deep sacrifice ball to left field, earning her sixth RBI of the season.
The defenses from both team were on display shutting out their opponent. Webber was able to break up the offensive stale mate in the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle, earning a 2-1 walk-off victory.
GAME TWO: WEBBER DEFEATS CUMBERLANDS, 9-5
The Patriots were able to set the tone in second game, scoring in the very first inning. Leadoff batter,
Hailey Wood, hit a ball down the left field line for a single and then advanced to second with her team best, ninth stolen base of the year. Wood advanced to third from a groundout and then used her speed once again to slide into home from a wild pitch.
Webber followed suite and put up three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning.
Jessica Webb started in the circle for UC, but only lasted 0.2 innings giving up three runs from two hits and two walks.
Paige Parker entered the game for Webb and lasted 1.2 giving up all five of her runs in the third inning.
Down 8-1 in the top of the sixth, the Patriots went to work to chip away at the Webber lead. Freshman,
Becca Riley got on base for the first time in her career hitting the ball hard to the shortstop who was unable to make the play. Stephenson followed that up with her own hit to the shortstop who once again could not make the play. Riley would eventually cross the plate from a wild pitch and excite the Cumberlands dugout for a comeback. Huber and
Katie Cheeseman got on base from a hit by pitch and a walk respectively to load the bases.
After going hitless in the team's trip through Florida so far, Malone roped a ball down the right field line that cleared the bases and put UC within striking distance to tie the game up.
Corinne Haverland reached base from a walk, but that would be all the offense UC could muster for the rest of the game.
Freshman
Kaci Goedde closed out the game for Cumberlands going 3.2 innings and limiting the Webber offense to just one run in the sixth inning and surrendering only five hits.
