Another Four Wrestlers Join UC for Next Season

6/4/2020 12:31:00 PM

Williamsburg, KY -  Looking to remain one of the top teams in the NAIA, the UC women's wrestling team has added another four student-athletes to next year's squad. Isela Mendez, Ariana Pereira, Alyssa Porter, and Mariana Rosales will all be joining the Patriots this fall.

Mendez becomes the third Northview High School graduate to wrestle for Cumberlands in recent years where she will join current Patriot, Alexis Medina and Graduate Assistant Coach Ismileyna Valles. Mendez has had much success in California winning a League Championship, CIF Regional Championship, and a CIF Masters Championship. She also placed twice at the CIF Regional and the CIF Masters while qualifying for the State Tournament twice. On the national stage Mendez was an All-American and placed seventh at the Folkstyle National Tournament.

Pereira, a Newark, CA native, has also seen success at the state level. She qualified for the State Championship all four years of high school becoming a state finalist twice and was a 2020 CIF State Champion. Pereria was also a four-time League Champion, four-time sectional finalist, and a two-time sectional champion, as well as a three-time CIF medalist.

Porter has only been wrestling for a short amount of time but she has earned plenty of accolades. The Louisville, KY native not only won the Louisville City Championship, but also earned second place at the Kentucky State Tournament. Porter has also succeeded off the mats becoming the first female wrestler from her team to graduate and also won a baking competition at the governor's mansion.

Rosales attended Jersey Village High School in Houston, TX where she won a District Championship in her first year of competing in the 128 weight-class. She was very active during her four years in high school as a three year varsity soccer player, a member of the bowling team, and on the school's marching band squad that made it to the State Marching Band Competition for the first time in school history.

Both Head Coach Donnie Stephens and Assistant Coach Sarah Allen are happy about adding the four student-athletes to their team for next season. The coaches feel they will be able to help UC continue their success both on and off the mats.
