Bowling Green, KY – For the second time this season,
Aaron Johnson was named Wrestler of the Week, announced by the Mid-South Conference office on Monday. The honor comes on the heels of a win over a higher-ranked opponent.
Johnson, fourth-ranked heavyweight, won his sole appearance of the week on home mats. Shortly after the Patriots secured the win over sixth-ranked Cumberland, Johnson met third-ranked Patrick Depiazza for the first time this season.
He controlled the match against the number-three heavyweight in the country, not allowing a takedown through the bout. Even scored after the first period, Johnson tallied the first point on an escape shortly before noting his first of two takedowns against Depiazza. He won the match by decision, 5-3.
He avenged a loss from the 2020 NAIA Championships with the win, which had knocked him out of the All-American rounds. He remains undefeated in duals (4-0) and overall (8-0) on the season.
The Patriots continue their MSC season on Thursday, hosting Thomas More for a dual in the O. Wayne Rollins Center. The dual will take place on Randy Vernon Court at 7 PM; fans will be limited to students, faculty and staff.
