Georgetown, KY – The (RV) UC men's basketball team played a hard fought game, however, couldn't overcome a late 13-2 run as they fell to #17 Georgetown 83-76 Thursday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. With the win, Georgetown improves to 11-3 overall and 8-3 in the MSC, while the Patriots move to 14-6 and 8-6 in conference play.
Tevin Olison continues to etch his name into the Patriot record book as he finished with 27 points, three rebounds, and a pair of assists. The Memphis, TN native became the 24
th member of Cumberlands 1,000 point club and the first Patriot to do it since 2012 when current UC Assistant Coach
Matt Daniel did it.
Josh Williams added 14 points, while
Collin Kelley and
Lamar Harris finished with ten points apiece. Harris also grabbed a team-high six rebounds in the contest.
Georgetown got off to a fast start taking a 10-2 lead four minutes into the first half. UC rallied as Olison sank a bucket, and was immediately followed by a
Steven Fitzgerald steal, which led to a
Jahi Hinson lay-up to cut the deficit to 10-6. A couple minutes later, Harris notched a put-back after grabbing an offensive rebound to help UC cut the deficit to three with 12:16 remaining. The Tigers pushed their lead to 19-12 before a bucket from Hinson sparked an 8-0 run, giving the Patriots its first lead of the game 20-19 with 6:50 remaining. On the next UC possession,
Isaiah Thompson completed a three-point play to make it 23-21 in favor of Cumberlands. Georgetown closed out the first half on a 9-3 run to take a 30-26 lead into the break.
The Tigers struck first in the second half, however, the Patriots responded quickly with buckets from Williams and Thompson to keep it a four-point game. After the two teams traded baskets, Olison hit a long three-pointer and on the next UC possession, the senior drove hard to lane and converted the lay-up to even the score at 37-37. That basket was his 1,000-career point as he entered the game with 988. Cumberlands and Georgetown would be tied four times over the next three minutes until Olison hit from beyond-the-arc to put the Patriots in front 49-48 with 9:41 remaining. There were nine lead changes over the next five minutes as Kelley accounted for five of the Patriots next 10 points. Two minutes later, Olison hit a three-pointer to even the score at 65-65 before the media timeout. Coming out of the break, Georgetown went on a 12-3 run, taking a 78-67 edge. UC battled back with a three-point play from Williams and Olison, however the Tigers went 5-6 from the foul line for the 83-76 final.
The Patriots return to the court Saturday, January 30, when they travel to Campbellsville, KY to face the Tigers. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. with live video is available
