Cox Breaks Collegiate National Record; Patriots Notch Six Top-Ten Finishes on Day 1 of Indoor Nationals

Madisonville, KY – Sophomore Madison Cox has continued her incredible Patriot career as she record a 595 to unofficially break the Collegiate USA Archery 600 round record Friday night at the Western Kentucky Archery Complex.  Cumberlands has a strong showing as six bowhunters posted top-ten finishes, while nine UC archers qualified for the MSC Championship.

Not only did Cox's 595 score break the national record it also earned her the top-seed in the bowhunter.  The McKee, KY native is no stranger to strong performances indoor as she carded a 589 for a 600 round at last year's indoor championship.  It marks the second year that a Cumberlands archer broke this record as Sarah Purtee set the record of 592 at last year's event.

Kaitlyn Shields notched a strong performance placing fourth with a 580.  The sophomore carded a 291 on the first half and finished with 42 10's and 16 nine's.  Teammate Sara Sherman tallied a 571, hitting 36 10's to place eighth I the event. Michala McDonald was the final Patriot to qualify after placing 11th with a 568.

The trio of Cox, Shields, and Sherman combined to earn UC the top-seed in the women's bowhunter division for the MSC championship Sunday.

On the men's side, Elliot Cross paced the way for Cumberlands recording a 594 with 54 10's to finish tied for third.  The sophomore was consistent event carding a 297 in both the front and back half.
Coby Hudson edged out teammate Brandon Durham for fifth place with a score of 593.  Hudson hit 53 10's, while Durham, who was making his bowhunter debut, tallied a 591 and accounted for 51 10's. 

The trio of Cross, Hudson, and Durham combined to earn UC the top-seed in the women's bowhunter division for the MSC championship Sunday.

Hunter Larese and Josh Isaacs both made the cut for the MSC bracket after placing 12th and 16th, respectfully.  Larese hit 46 10's en route to a 585, while Isaacs notched a 570 with 35 10's.

Cox and Cross will also team up in the mixed bowhunter division, where UC has earned the top seed.

The Patriots will return to range tomorrow for the final day of qualifying and the opening of the MSC Championships.  Compound shooters are schedule to compete at 9 a.m., while bowhunter and recurve are set to compete at 1 p.m.
