Box Score Bowling Green, KY – The University of the Cumberlands volleyball team dropped its first game of their spring campaign against Campbellsville 3-2 (23-25, 25-14, 18-25, 25-18, 6-15) on the first day of the Vette City Classic Friday afternoon. After this game, UC moves to 1-2 on the season.
Savanah Schwarz led the way for the Patriots with 44 assists and 14 digs, while freshman
Emily Prewitt contributed 15 kills and two blocks. With a career-high in kills,
Olivia Verdecchia went for 14 and added two blocks.
The match was tied at 11-11 in the first set until the Patriots jumped out on a 6-2 run headlined with a block by
Shelby Lackey to take the advantage at 17-13. With a beautiful set by Schwarz for a Prewitt kill, Cumberlands was able to maintain the lead at 21-20. After trading points, UC was able to take the set 25-23 with a Verdecchia kill.
Campbellsville started off the second set started hot scoring seven unanswered points until Prewitt scored a kill to make the score 7-1. The Tigers were able to keep the pressure on for the duration of the second set eventually taking it at 25-14.
After dropping the third set 25-18, Cumberlands seemed to find their groove in the fourth. Verdecchia and
Ashley Sobocinski tallied back-to-back kills to take a quick 2-0 lead. Continuing the momentum, the Patriots managed to score eight unanswered points to make the score 14-6. With a final kill by Verdecchia, UC was able to take the fourth set at 25-18 and force a decisive fifth set.
The fifth and final set of the game did not start well for the Patriots as Campbellsville opened with six unanswered. UC answered back strong though with yet another great set by Schwarz that was cashed-in by Sobocinski kill with Cumberlands still trailing at 7-4. However, this was to no avail as the Tigers managed to roar back and win the final set 15-6 and take the 3-2 win.
The Patriots will return to action in The Vette City Classic on Saturday January 30, with games against Shawnee State at 10 A.M. and another game against Georgetown at 1:30 P.M.
