Williamsburg, KY – The UC football team had five different players rush for at least 50 rushing yards as the Patriots tallied 496 yards on the ground to defeat Campbellsville 52-27 to cap off homecoming weekend Saturday night at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. With the win the Patriots extend their home win streak in the 'Burg to seven consecutive games as they move to 5-2 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.
Leading the way for UC was
Zalon Reynolds, who amassed a career-high 186 yards on the ground and a score. Not only did the Chelsea, AL native help pace the UC offense averaging 12.4 yards per carry, with this performance Reynolds has surpassed 1,000 career rushing yards.
Javarie White, making his first collegiate start, and
Devin Jones both tallied 86 yards and a score, while
Jamar Nuby rushed for 59 yards.
Jakob Greer accounted for 154 yards of total offense, going 15-27 for 192 through the air and 62 on the ground with a pair of scores.
Brandon Stuckey was the recipient of six of those completions for 93 yards and a score, which was his sixth of the season making it a career-high.
AP Parham notched 66 yards and a score in the win.
Defensively, Cumberlands was led by
Adam Caudle, who finished with eight tackles and a sack, while
Kendall Adams-Young notched six tackles, while
Zyan Hollis forced a fumble. Oluwatobi Adewale and
JR Smith each recorded an interception.
The two teams traded possessions to open the game before Campbellsville went on as 12 play, 51 yard drive that resulted in a field goal to give the Tigers a 3-0 midway through the first quarter. Campbellsville forced their second turnover of the game and were looking to add to their lead, however, back-to-back stops by
Cortez Brown halted the drive and forced a punt. It looked the UC was putting a drive together, however, Campbellsville forced a turnover to take a 3-0 lead into the second quarter.
Cumberlands started to turn the tide in the second quarter as Smith intercepted a Josh Meglis pass, on the first play, to give UC the ball at midfield. Reynolds and White pounded the ball on the ground, while Greer completed a 29-yard reception to Parham to help give UC first and goal. White capped off the drive with a one-yard run, putting the Patriots in front 7-3.
After the two teams traded possession, Campbellsville capitalized on a couple Patriot turnovers as D'Anta Sipp gave the Tigers the 10-7 lead on a 14 yard run. On the ensuing possession UC drove the ball down the field and settled for a
Trip Holloway 41-yard field goal, which was a career-high for the freshman, to even the score at 10-10 with 2:36 remaining.
UC's defense stepped up as
Walker Dunn broke up a pass and
Jaylin Burns and Adams-Young combined for a one-yard loss on third down forced the Tigers to punt. Looking to retake the lead before halftime Greer connected with Stuckey and
Jacob Ward for a combined 17 yards to the Campbellsville 41. Greer than scrambled for 12 yards to earn another first down and three plays later the junior transfer scrambled to his left before tucking the ball racing up field and plowing through the Campbellsville defense for an 18-yard score to put the Patriots ahead 17-10 at the break.
Cumberlands carried the momentum into the second half as they beginning with ball. Greer rushed for 13 yards, before finding Stuckey for an eight-yard grab to set up second-and-two from the 47. The Patriots handed it Reynolds, who rushed it up the middle of the field breaking seven tackles to break free from the pile and race to the endzone extending UC's lead to 24-10.
Campbellsville converted their second field goal, this one from 35 yards out, to cut into the lead. The Patriots offense however continued to grind as Reynolds tallied 45 yards on the next possession before Parham came around on an end-around to the right side and dove just inside the pylon for the score to make it 28-13 midway through the quarter.
The UC offense continued to roll as Greer and Reynolds combined for 29 yards on the ground to move the ball into Tigers territory. On fourth and seven, Greer rolled to his left to avoid pressure and connected with Stuckey, who caught the ball going to the ground for a touchdown, making it 38-13 with 2:38 remaining in the quarter.
Campbellsville looked to cut into the deficit, however, on a fourth and one Hollis stopped Meglis and forced a fumble, which was recovered by
Kumi Sarpong Jr. to give UC possession in Campbellsville territory.
The Patriots strong ground game carried over into the fourth quarter as
Devin Jones and Greer combined for a six play, 60 yard drive. Jones tallied rushes of 11 and 14 yards, before capping off the drive with a 24-yard run that featured two jukes as he broke to the outside for the score. That gave UC a 45-13 advantage. The Tigers cut into the deficit with a 13 play, 70-yard drive, capped off by a touchdown making it 45-20. Cumberlands utilized the combination of
Nathan Arnold and
Jamar Nuby to move up the field as Arnold notched a five yard rushing score to round out the Patriots offense as the Tigers added a score later for the 52-27 final.
The 496 yards on the ground are the most rushing yards in a game since October 6, 2018 when UC tallied 495 yards in a 67-7 win at Union.
Cumberlands returns to the field Saturday, October 30, when they travel to Pikeville to take on the Bears. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. with live stats available
