Patriots Dominate to Finish Out Campbellsville Classic

Campbellsville, KY - Cumberlands could do no wrong in their contest against Ohio Valley University as UC was able to take home the 108-80 victory Saturday night at the Powell Athletic Center. The offense continues to fire on all cylinders for the Patriots as they eclipse triple digits for the second time in just three games while hitting nearly half of their three-point attempts (13-27) to improve to 3-0 on the season.

UC's bench was a major factor in this one as they accounted for 54 points with 23 of them coming from J.J Ramey.  Ramey lit it up from the field, finishing 8-9 from the floor, including 6-7 from distance. A good majority of his damage came in the second half of play as he recorded 14 points on 5-6 shooting in the final 20 minutes of action. Ramey's efforts was good enough to give him a new career-high in points for a game. Steven Fitzgerald and Jahi Hinson finished with 14 points apiece, while Lamar Harris notched 13 and a team-high eight rebounds in the win.

The two teams traded buckets through the opening several minutes of the game as neither team could jump out to the commanding lead early on. The deficit between the Patriots and Fighting Scots was never more than seven points through the first eight minutes of action as neither team was willing to blink. UC continually forced the issue by creating contact and getting to the foul line to open up the game. Cumberlands was able to shoot 10 free throws in the opening eight minutes of the contest, hitting seven of them and forcing their counterpart into foul trouble. Ohio Valley's bench was the the main reason for them hanging around up to that point as the reserves had 13 of the team's first 24 points. Cumberlands looked like they were going to begin to pull away as their lead grew to nine on two separate occasions in the early going of the first half. The first came with 10:58 remaining in the half after a Jahi Hinson layup put the score at 23-14 in favor of the Patriots. A pair of three-pointers and a mid-range jumper for the Scots quickly cut that lead to three just two minutes later.  UC responded with a 6-0 run of their own capped off by a Fitzgerald layup at the 7:45 mark of half number one, extending the Patriots lead to 33:24 with 7:45 remaining. Ohio Valley didn't let things get any farther than that, though, as three straight Ohio Valley buckets made it a 33-30 game with 6:39 on the game clock. With five minutes remaining in the first half of play UC grabbed their first double-digit lead of the game. J.J. Ramey caught the ball on the wing off the pass from Austin Hall and drained the trey, making it a 42-30 lead. UC would retain the large lead for the majority of the rest of the half with their largest lead coming courtesy of a Kahlil Davis triple. Davis caught the pass from Fitzgerald at the top of the key and did not waste the open look, canning the shot and making it a 49-35 game with 3:22 showing on the clock.

UC used the majority of their team to help them take the 54-44 lead into the halftime break as five players recorded eight or more points in the first half. Davis finished with eight while Fitzgerald, Lamar Harris, and Ramey each had nine with Hinson being the team's leading scorer with 10.

The Patriots began the second half on a 19-9 run in the first seven minutes of action. UC dialed it up from long distance during the run as they made a trio of triples with two coming from Isaiah Payton, who also had two assists and a steal during that stretch. Cumberlands was in complete control of the game from there on out as their advantage on the scoreboard never dipped below 15 the rest of the way. The Patriots were able to push their lead past 20 at the 8:32 mark as Ramey hit a three-pointer as part of ten unanswered points. After Ramey's first made triple he went on to hit two more in a row, accounting for all of UC's points during a two-minute stretch. Ramey's three-point barrage acted as the spark coach Daniel's team needed to put this one away for sure as the Patriots shot a perfect 10-10 from the field the rest of the game. In those final eight and a half minutes of action, Ramey led the squad, scoring 12 points while Isaiah Thompson pitched in six, Matt Cromer with five, and Kahlil Davis three.

The Patriots will look to keep things rolling in their next matchup as they travel to New Albany, IN to take on IU Southeast. UC will hit the road for their contest against the Grenadiers on November 3rd with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
