Bowling Green, KY – After taking down Freed-Hardeman in the Opening Round, Cumberlands suffers a heart breaking lost to Thomas More in the Quarterfinals of the Mid-South Tournament on Thursday evening, (15-25, 11-25, 20-25).
Head Coach
Kathryn Hart said, "This match was a tough one. Not having our senior leader, Lily (Chapman) was tough, but our players fought hard against a quality opponent."
In this match UC was led by
Danielle Jackson who came away with five kills and three aces.
Anna Blumeier,
Olivia Verdecchia, and
Allyson Grava all came away with five kills each.
Savanah Schwarz came away with a team-high 15 assists. Grava also added seven digs, while
Lexi Lester came away with five.
Thomas More was able to get the momentum and take set one and two. The Patriots fought back to try to respond and take set three. UC opened the set with a Verdecchia kill, followed by an
Emily Prewitt kill. Then Prewitt and
Shelby Lackey would come together for a block to take a 5-3 lead. The Saints would score two points, then Prewitt would notch a kill, then Grava would notch a kill. After another two points by the Saints, Jackson and Lackey would come away with a block. Following the block Grava would put in another kill. A few plays later Verdecchia with put in two kills. From there Thomas More would make their run, going 9-2 to take the lead 21-15, forcing a Cumberlands timeout. Following the timeout, UC would get kills from Lester, Jackson, Prewitt, and Blumeier, but it was not enough, and Thomas More would end the Patriots season.
UC finishes their season with a record of 20-11. Coach Hart also added "It was a strange year overlapping with the COVID season of spring 21. We are proud of our kids, we rebounded back from a tough season last year and took a step forward this season. We will rest up a little then get back to work in the winter/spring offseason and get ready for 2022."
