Patriots Fall to Top-Seeded Tennessee Southern in MSC Championship Match

Bowling Green, KY- The 15th ranked UC Women's Soccer team fell to #4 Tennessee Southern 0-1 in the Mid-South Conference Championship game Friday afternoon. The Patriots fall to 15-5-1 on the year and will look to continue their postseason run with the automatic bid they received for advancing to the conference championship game.

Despite giving up the single goal, Laura Vogt and the Patriot defense played well against a very aggressive Firehawks offense. The UC defense held a team that has been averaging 23.1 shots per game and 5.72 goals per game to only nine shots and one goal. Vogt made four saves including a couple of diving stops to limit the UT Southern offense.

The matchup between the #4 ranked team and the #15 ranked team lived up to the excitement from opening kickoff. With two team that have aggressive offenses and strong defenses, opportunities were limited. In the third minute of the match, the Firehawks were striking early with a corner kick but Vogt tallied her first save of the game to keep UT Southern off the board. In the 17th minute of the match UC was on the attack when Jayden Boelter fired a hard shot towards the goal but the UT Southern goalie made a great save to keep Cumberlands scoreless. The Firehawks took the lead in the 23rd minute of the match off of a counter attack after an offensive push from the Patriots.

In the second half, the UC offense looked to push forward more and put more pressure on the Firehawks defense. On a set piece, Jenna Rockwell went up for a header in the goalie but the ball went just outside of the post and rolled out of bounds. In the 52nd minute of the match Boelter fired another hard shot at the goal but once again the UT Southern goalie made an excellent save.

Cumberlands kept on the attack in the early minutes of the second half, trying to find the equalizer in the championship match. Laura Navajas Marin sent a ball forward to Rockwell but the Firehawks goalie once again made the save on the shot. Navajas looked to have an opportunity of her own minutes later when she worked the ball past the UT Southern defenders but the Firehawks goalie made her fourth stop of the game and kept UC off the board. During the later minutes of the half, Cumberlands opportunities were limited and they just weren't able to make the right pass to get past the strong UT Southern defense.

With the victory, UT Southern won their first MSC championship since joining the Mid-South Conference.

The Patriots will learn where they will be heading and their matchups for the NAIA Opening round on Monday, November 15 on the NAIA National Tournament Selection Show.
