Strong Second Half Not Enough as Patriots Fall in Road Game

Dayton, TN – The UC women's basketball team made a late surge, however, it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as they fell to (RV) Bryan 97-71 Tuesday night.  With the win the Lions improve to 7-0, while to Patriots move to 5-3 on the season.

Destiny Haworth and Kaylie Monday each hit three triples and finished with 13 points apiece to lead the way for UC.  Abbi Douglas added 11 points and six rebounds, while Channing Lewis chipped in eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. 

Bryan opened the game on a 7-0 run, before Kassie Monday pushed it up-court and found Abbi Douglas for a layup to get UC on the board.  Douglas added another bucket, however the Lions went on a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 16-4 with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter.  The Patriots utilized a trio of three's from Lillie Hall and Destiny Haworth but found themselves trailing Bryan 31-13 after the opening stanza.

UC came out strong in the second quarter as Douglas and Channing Lewis converted consecutive layups to cut the deficit to 31-17 a minute into the second quarter.  Bryan went on an 11-2 run, that spanned four minutes, before the two teams traded three-pointers extending the Lions' lead to 45-22 midway through the second quarter.  Haworth and Kaylie Monday Cumberlands final ten points of the half as the Patriots trailed 60-32 at the break. 

Cumberlands looked to come out of break strong and drained five three-pointers in the third quarter.  Kaylee Mathis opened the half hitting one from deep as Whitney Caldwell added one from deep two minutes later which cut the deficit to 64-38 with 8:18 remaining.  Bryan netted eight unanswered, before Haworth nailed her third three-pointer of the game as the Lions had a 72-41 advantage midway through the period.  Shelby Moore added one from long range and in closing second of the quarter Haworth connected with Kaylie Monday from deep as UC trailed 82-52 heading into the fourth.

The Lions their lead with a 7-2 run, before Lewis netted four straight Patriot points, which was followed by a Kaylie Monday three to cut the deficit to 94-61 with 3:41 remaining.  The Patriots closed out the game on a 10-3, which included a three from Abbey Estes, for the 97-71 final.

The Patriots will return to the court Thursday, December 2, when the travel to Pulaski, TN to face UT Southern in a MSC showdown.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with live stats available here.
