Georgetown, KY – The (RV) Cumberlands football team was looking to duplicate their second half success in consecutive weeks, however, their comeback bid fell short as they fell on the road to 16
th-ranked Georgetown 28-7 Saturday afternoon at Toyota Stadium. With the win the Tigers improve to 7-2 overall, and 4-2 in conference games.
Martize Smith led the Patriots offense with 98 yards on 19 carries.
Ben Nixon went 7-15 for 44 yards and a touchdown, while
Ethan Cox led UC's receiving core with four receptions for 26 yards and a score. For the second straight game
Adam Caudle led the Patriots with 11 tackles as Keyshawn Catlett finished with eight.
Harlin Brown averaged 43.7 yards per punt and pinned the Tigers deep multiple times throughout the game.
Georgetown opened the game with a 12 play, 75 yards drive that took just over six minutes to punch in a one-yard score to take a 7-0 lead. After a three-and-out for UC, the Tigers extended their lead to 14-0 with a 38-yard strike to make it 14-0. The two teams traded possession twice as Georgetown took a 14-0 lead after the opening quarter.
As both defense continue to step up in the second quarter the Patriots started to move the ball. Smith opened the drive with a nine yard rush, which was followed by a four yard reception by
Alonzo Russell for the first down.
Jakob Greer added a completion to
Brandon Stuckey as UC moved the ball into Tigers territory before the drive got halted. The Patriots defense forced consecutive three-and-outs before
JR Smith recovered a fumble to give UC possession near mid-field.
Zalon Reynolds and Smith combined for 28 yards to move the ball down to the Tigers 29, however, a turnover gave it back to the Tigers. The score remained 14-0 until the final minute of the half, when Georgetown scored twice to extend their lead to 28-0 heading into the break.
Both defenses continued their strong pressure in the third quarter as the two teams traded possession. Georgetown looked to extend their lead, however, a missed field goal open an opportunity for UC. The combination of Nixon, Russel, and Smith moved the ball 37 yards into Tigers territory. Cumberlands went for it on fourth and seven as Nixon rolled out and found
Ethan Cox for a 19 yard score to cut the deficit to 28-7 with 4:31 remaining.
Myles Simon notched a sack on the next defensive series to force three-and-out, however, neither team scored over the final minutes of the quarter.
Cumberlands opened the fourth quarter with a long drive. Nixon engineered a 16 plays, 67 yards drive guiding UC down to the Georgetown nine to make it first and goal. That was the closest the Patriots got as they weren't able to convert a fourth and goal. Each team had one more possession in the game but couldn't score for the 28-7 final.
It marks the second straight week the Patriots have held their opponent scoreless in the second half.
The Patriots will return home Saturday, November 13, for their regular season finale against top-ranked Lindsey Wilson. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. with live stats available
