Douglas’ Career Day Not Enough as Patriots Fall on the Road

Richmond, IN – The Cumberlands women's basketball team erased a 20-point first half deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough as UC fell to IU East 95-86 Tuesday night. Despite the setback, guard Abbi Douglas tallied a career-high 25 points and seven steals as the Patriots move to 4-1 on the season.

Douglas converted 8-10 from the charity stripe, while Channing Lewis added 15 points and five rebounds.  Kaylee Mathis contributed 12 points in the game, including hitting three triples.  Lillie Hall, Destiny Haworth, and Shelby Moore added nine points apiece.

IU East jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, however, Hall converted on a pair of free throws to cut it 4-2. The Patriots couldn't find their offensive rhythm as the Red Wolves scored 14 unanswered points before Kaylee Mathis converted on a jumper to cut the deficit to 18-4 with 3:27 remaining in the first quarter.   Douglas netted Cumberlands next three points as IU East took a 21-7 lead after the opening period.

The Red Wolves extended their lead to 20-points, however, the Patriots battled back as Hall connected with Sydney Dalton, who drained her first collegiate three before Hall added a layup to cut the deficit to 27-12 two minutes in.  Cumberlands went on an 11-0 run, that featured a pair of three's from Haworth and one from Mathis to bring UC within eight at 31-23 with 4:19 remaining.  The two teams traded baskets over the final minutes of the first half as the Red Wolves took a 44-32 lead into the break.

Cumberlands came out of the break with six unanswered points to make it 44-38 just over a minute into the third quarter.  Two possessions later Haworth hit from beyond-the-arc to get UC within five, which is the closest the Patriots came in the quarter.  The Patriots got six points from Lewis as the two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes until IU East went on an 8-4 lead to take an 68-56 lead with 1:30 remaining.  Moore sank a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the quarter as Cumberlands trailed 68-58 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Red Wolves extended their lead to 73-58 before the Patriots came storming back as Douglas hit a jumper and Lewis followed with a three-pointer to bring UC within ten points a minute into the quarter.  The two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes until Douglas hit a jumper at the 6:02 mark to make it 81-71.  Those were the first of six straight points from the Ashland City, TN native as Lewis added a bucket to make it 81-77 with 4:50 left.  The teams traded free throws as Douglas hit the equalizer from long range to tie the game 82-82 with 3:22 remaining.  From that point IU East utilized a 13-3 run to close out the game for the 95-86 final.

UC finished with 12 steals in the game compared to the Red Wolves two.
