Williamsburg, KY – The UC women's basketball team got a pair of 22-point performances from
Destiny Haworth and
Kassie Monday to earn a 77-59 conference win over Shawnee State Saturday afternoon on Randy Vernon Court. With the win the Patriots improve to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Bears move to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Haworth led the charge with 22 points, marking her third 20+ point performance of the season. In addition to netting 22 points, Kasie Monday set career-high with six three-pointers, and seven rebounds in the win.
Lillie Hall chipped in nine points and a team-high five assists, while
Reagan Begole added six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of points.
Kaylie Monday notched a team-high three steals to go along with four assists and three boards.
Shawnee State netted the first seven points of the game before
Destiny Haworth connected with
Kassie Monday for consecutive three-pointers to cut the deficit to 7-6 three minutes into the opening quarter. UC next four points came from the charity stripe before
Lillie Hall drove and dished it to
Reagan Begole for a layup at 3:26 mark to cut the deficit to 13-12. Hall added a pair of free throws to give UC their first lead of the game two minutes later, which also sparked an 8-0 run that included a four-point play from Haworth to give the Patriots a 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Cumberlands carried that momentum into the second quarter as the opened the period on an 11-2 run.
Kassie Monday added five points on that run as
Shelby Moore and Hall each added a field goal to give the Patriots a 31-15 edge with 6:48 remaining. Shawnee State scored nine unanswered points before
Whitney Caldwell drove to the basket for a layup extending UC's advantage to 33-24. Hall netted the Patriots final four points of the half as the two teams traded baskets giving Cumberlands a 38-30 advantage at the break.
Haworth took control of the game in the third quarter netting 18 of the Patriots 25 points in the period as she outscored the Bears as well 18-15. UC opened the quarter with
Kaylie Monday finding Haworth and
Kassie Monday on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead to 44-32. The two teams traded baskets as Shawnee State cut the lead to 48-40 midway through the quarter. From that point the Maryville, TN native got hot shooting scoring ten straight Patriots points as part of a 12-1 run giving Cumberlands a 63-41 advantage with 1:27 remaining. The Bears netted the final four points of the quarter as UC took a 63-45 edge heading into the final quarter.
Kassie Monday continued her sharp shooting from the outside as she hit her fifth triple to open the fourth quarter. Shawnee State went on an 8-4 run before Monday hit her career-high sixth three-pointer of the game extending the Patriots lead to 73-53 midway through the period.
Chelsey Napier hit a pull-up jumper as
Casey Coleman sank a pair from the charity stripe for the 77-59 final.
The Patriots outrebounded the Bears 39-27 in the win and held a 22-10 assists edge in the game.
Cumberlands will return to the court Friday, December 31, when they travel to Richmond, KY to face Eastern Kentucky University in an exhibition game. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be featured on ESPN+.
