Williamsburg, KY – The UC women's basketball team used a 33-5 first quarter effort to open the game and never looked back as they defeated Wilberforce 83-60 Monday night on Randy Vernon Court. With the win, UC improves to 7-4 overall and 6-1 in the O. Wayne Rollins Center.
Kaylie Monday and
Kassie Monday each finished with 17 points to lead the scoring for Cumberlands.
Kaylie Monday went 6-9 from the field, including a career-high five three-pointers to go along with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Abbi Douglas put up another strong performance with 16 points, 12 of which game in the first quarter and seven rebounds.
Channing Lewis tied her career-high with ten rebounds as
Shelby Moore dished out a game-high four assists.
Douglas came out strong netting the first six points of the game before
Kaylie Monday forced a steal and laid it in to give Cumberlands an 8-0 lead with 7:30 remaining in the first half. The duo of Douglas and Monday added eight more points for the Patriots as they pushed their lead to 16-3 midway through the first half. Less than a minute later Moore kept the offensive attack going pulling up with a jumper as part of ten unanswered, which was capped off with back-to-back three's from
Kassie Monday making it 26-3 with 3:08 left. UC added the final seven points of the quarter, including a three from Moore to take a 33-5 advantage. Lewis netted five rebounds in the quarter with three of them coming on the offensive glass to help UC jump ahead early.
Cumberlands continued to apply the offensive pressure in the second quarter as
Kaylie Monday sank her third shot from deep to initiate and 8-0 that was capped off by a Douglas layup giving UC a 41-7 edge three minutes in. Wilberforce responded with a 10-3 run, the spanned five minutes, before Moore dished out to
Kaylie Monday from behind-the-arc to extend UC's lead to 47-17 with 1:26 remaining. The Bulldogs added a pair of baskets in the final minute to cut the lead to 47-22 at the break.
UC opened the second half with
Destiny Haworth driving for a layup as
Kassie Monday hit from deep to extend the lead back to 28 points a minute into the third quarter. Wilberforce went on an 8-2 run, before
Lillie Hall hit a jumper and then dished out an assist to
Whitney Caldwell to make it 58-32 with 4:27 remaining. Both teams continued to make runs as the Patriots went on a 7-0 run late in the quarter to make it 66-38 with 1:36 remaining. Over the final minute of the quarter the two teams combined to go 7-12 from the foul line as UC took a 69-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
The two teams traded baskets to open the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs netted five unanswered to cut the lead to 73-54 with 6:43 remaining.
Jaiden Cox snapped the run with a layup as Douglas and
Chelsey Napier each added points in the paint to extend the lead to 79-54 with 3:39 left.
Sydney Dalton added UC's final four points of the game for the 83-60 final.
The Patriots outscored the Bulldogs 42-28 in points in the paint, while winning the rebounding battle 40-28. UC finished with 17 assists making it the seventh time this season that the dished out at least 15 assists in a game, while their 15 steals are tied for a season-high.
UC will return to the court Saturday, December 11, when they host West Virginia Tech. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. with live video available
