Harrogate, TN - The #22 UC women's tennis team finished the weekend sweep as they went on to defeat Bluefield State College 5-2 concluding their trip at the LMU Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon. With thte win, the Patriots move to 2-0 overall on the season.
The Patriots came out with some tenacity as they took two of the three doubles matches to start the day. Tessa Gray and Laura Marie had success early on for UC as they would go on to win their #3 doubles match 6-0 against Victoria Cabral and Paula Saez. Tomomi Nagao and Mikaela Fros continued kept their foot on the gas with a 6-3 win of their own against Shreya Chakrabarly and Jimenez. Lastly, Hana Shimeno and Satsuki Mitani dropped their match 6-4 against Ghita Cord and Laura Arias 6-4, but UC would go on to take the early 1-0 lead.
Johanna Beckman came out firing at the start of singles play with a win at the #5 singles spot with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Saez to put the Patriots up 2-0. Nagao, with her second-straight win at the #1 spot this season, beat Chakrabarly 6-2, 6-2 to give UC the early 3-0 lead. Bluefield State would go on to take the win at #2 singles to cut Cumberlands lead to 3-1.
Freshman Laura Marie would put the pressure back on The Big Blue as she defeated Arias at #3 singles 6-3, 6-3 to give UC the 4-1 lead. Losing her second set, Shimeno was up next as she rallied back to win her match at #4 singles against Zanotti 6-0, 3-6, 10-8 which widened the lead to 5-1. Lastly, Bluefield State would go on to take the #6 singles match to have the final score sit at 5-2 with the Patriots taking the win.
The Patriots will return to the court on Wednesday, February 24, in Barbourville, KY where they will face #14 Union College. Â
