MSC Weekly Honors Go To Baseball's Rodriguez, Hernandez

2/22/2021 2:17:00 PM

Bowling Green, KY – Cumberlands baseball noted a stellar 5-0 weekend at Big League Camp this weekend, helped along by appearances by Rolando Rodriguez and Walter Hernandez. The pair of Patriots claimed MSC Player of the Week honors, announced by the conference office on Monday.

Rodriguez, catcher for the Patriots, was most notable at the plate this weekend in his four games played. The senior hit .500 on the weekend, plating seven of the Pats 48 runs scored at Big League Camp. On five hits, three went for extra bases as he rallied a pair of doubles and noted a 1.000 slugging percentage.

After charting the Patriots first homerun of the season a couple weeks ago at the Grizzly Invitational, Rodriguez tallied his second homer of the season against Northwestern Ohio. The senior did so in high-scoring fashion, clearing the bases for the Pats first grand slam of 2021.

Rodriguez scored only once himself on his trip around the bases. However, his courtesy runner scored four more times after he got on base.

Taking Pitcher of the Week honors, Hernandez was the king of the hill for the Patriots, completing his seven-inning stretch against UNOH. The junior gave up one lone run on four hits, unearned however.

Hernandez tallied his first win of the season in the complete game, where he tied his career-best eight strikeouts. It is the third time of his career dropping that many on strikes, doing so twice last season.

Cumberlands baseball returns to Doyle Buhl Stadium in Williamsburg tomorrow, February 23 for a doubleheader against Brescia. First pitch is slated for 1 PM.
