Box Score Bowling Green, KY – A slow offensive day resulted in the #24 Patriots dropping their second round MSC Tournament matchup against Shawnee State 59-47 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Cumberlands moves to 14-5 overall and 10-5 in the MSC.
Silvia Veloso led all UC scorers and dropped yet another double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals, while Abbi Douglas had 10 points, one board, and a block. Vilma Covane led the team in rebounding with 11 boards to accompany her nine points.
The Patriots struggled on offense at the start of the first quarter as they went on an almost two and half minute scoring drought until Douglas was able to secure the first bucket to put UC up at 2-1 with 7:40 remaining. Scoring difficulties continued to plague the Patriots offense as Veloso would go on to score the last points of the first quarter at 1:25 for UC as she wove her way through the Bear defense with Cumberlands trailing 7-10 heading into the second.
To start the second quarter, the Bears would go on a 5-0 run until Carla Covane was able to convert off of a Shawnee State turnover with bankshot from the low block that cut the Patriot deficit to 9-15 with 8:03 remaining. The following UC possession, V. Covane snagged another two points to make the score 11-15 with 7:36 left in the second. Over the next five minutes, the Bears would go on a 7-1 run before Veloso was able to hit a floater to make the score 14-22 with 2:40 remaining in the first half. The two teams continued to trade buckets until Hannah Lawson scored the last bucket of second quarter for the Patriots with a layup at 0:53 to have the score at 18-27 with the UC trailing at halftime.
Cumberlands started the third quarter well as Veloso used her speed to get to the rack and score to minimize the Bears lead to only 20-27 with 9:48 remaining. The Patriots were finally able to utilize some transition office when V. Covane threw a beautiful outlet pass to Douglas for the layup to slash the Bears lead to 27-38 with 3:34 left in the third. With the last basket of the third quarter, UC would look to Douglas again as she cashed in a three to put the score at 30-42 going into the final quarter.
The final quarter of the game started the same as the third with Veloso, once again, using her superior athleticism to strike first to make the score 32-43 at 9:28 with the Patriots still behind. Destiny Haworth made the second and final three on the day for UC to have the Patriots still behind at 39-53 with 6:01 remaining in the game. Cumberlands would go on to tie with the Bears for the rest of the fourth quarter in scoring at 6-6, but it was not enough with the final score at 59-47.
The #24 Patriots will now wait to see the NAIA Tournament seeding announcment which will be made on Thursday, March 4 at 7 PM.
