Box Score Crestview Hills, KY – Despite well-spread scoring amongst the roster, the (RV) Cumberlands women's basketball team lost to fourth-ranked Thomas More 79-50 in Crestview Hills on Thursday night. With the loss, the Patriots move to 12-4 on the season and 8-4 in the MSC.
Leading all scorers for the Patriots was Abbi Douglas with 17 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Carla Covane also contributed eight points, five rebounds, and one steal, while Vilma Covane put up seven points, two rebounds, and one steal.
The first two minutes of the first game did not bode well for the Patriots as Thomas More opened with an 8-2 run with 7:51 remaining. Douglas was able to halt that run with a pair of made free throws to lessen the Saints lead to 8-4 with 7:08 left in the first quarter. Following a UC timeout, Veloso made a beautiful pass to Douglas for the bucket to diminish the Thomas More lead to 13-8 with 5:00 remaining. The Saints continued to have success from deep as Kenzie Schwarber hit a three to enlarge their lead to 23-12 with 2:09 remaining. The Patriots would end the quarter on a high note with another Veloso assist for a Douglas bucket make the score 25-14 with 1:04 remaining. The first quarter came to a close with Thomas More leading 27-14.
The second quarter started well for the Patriots as they sparked a 4-0 run with a pair of free throws made by C. Covane and a bucket by Raegan Hubbard to make the score 27-18 with 8:25 remaining. Both teams struggled to score over the next three minutes until Shelby Moore was able to bank a shot in to cut the Thomas More lead to 32-20 with 5:20 remaining. After a series of substitutions, Moore was able to thread the needle to Douglas for another bucket to reduce the Saints lead to 34-21 with 2:11 left in the second quarter. Addison Wilson would be the last Patriot to score in the first half with a made floater to decrease the Thomas More lead to 37-27 with 17 seconds remaining in the half. Thomas More would go on to make another deep ball at the end of the quarter to widen their lead to 40-27 going into halftime.
Cumberlands came out firing in the third quarter with a transition bucket by C. Covane to reduce the Saints lead to 40-29 with 9:39 remaining. The Patriots struggled midway through the third as Thomas More went on an 11-0 run until UC was able to drain a three by Abby Estes to make the score 51-32 with 6:01 remaining. Cumberlands ended the quarter with back-to-back buckets made by V. Covane and Channing Lewis to have Thomas More leading at 62-41 with a quarter left in the game.
UC began the fourth quarter with a three-ball by Douglas to minimize the Saints lead to 65-44 with 9:24 remaining. While being active on defense, C. Covane managed to grab a steal that led to a bucket by Kaylee Mathis to make the score 70-50 with 6:14 remaining. However, the Patriots would not make another bucket for the remainder of the fourth to make the final score 79-50.
The Patriots will hit the court again on Saturday, February 6 against Shawnee State University. Tip-off for the game is at 1:30 PM.
