Pulaski, TN - Balanced hitting and a three-run homerun from
Madison Huber helped the #21 ranked Patriots complete a weekend sweep of Martin Methodist Saturday afternoon. The 12-5 and 9-0 wins gives Cumberlands an overall record of 23-5 on the season and a perfect 4-0 record in Mid-South Conference play.
In game one, both
Meryn Livingston and
Hailey Wood notched RBI triples while
Emily Jasper recorded three hits and an RBI of her own. Pitcher Kaitlin White turned in five solid innings of work to pick up the win.
Game two saw the bats stay hot for UC.
Tori Malone, Jasper, and Wood all noted multi-hit games while Huber struck her first home run of the season.
Talli Burgess recorded six strikeouts to secure a complete game win for the Pats. The victory propels the freshman Burgess to a 6-1 record on the year.
Game One: 12-5
Both teams plated runs in the first inning. In the top of the first,
Emily Bryant reached on a walk and advanced to second on a
Maddie Sickau single. A few pitches later, Livingston singled to right to score Bryant from second and give UC the first run of the game. Following an error, Sickau scored to extend the Patriots lead to 2-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, two RedHawks singles put runners in scoring position. A single from Chloe Clavon scored two runs to tie the game up. Martin added another run to take a 3-2 lead heading to the second inning.
The Patriots quickly answered the RedHawks scores. Wood found herself on second base following a walk and a stolen base. Jasper recorded an infield single to move Wood over to third base. A few pitches later, the Patriots manufactured a run as
Katie Cheeseman hit an RBI ground out, scoring Wood which evened the game at 2-2. The Patriots added another run in the inning as Jasper scored to give Cumberlands the 4-3 lead going into the third inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, the game was nodded up at 4-4. Bryant led off the inning for the Patriots and reached base on a walk. A sacrifice bunt from Sickau and a fielder's obstruction call moved Bryant to third base. Livingston stepped into the batter's box and raked a triple into left center to score Bryant and give Cumberlands the 5-4 advantage. Huber was able to score Livingston after she grounded out to short.
The Patriots added five runs in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer from Huber. White was able to close the game out in the bottom of the seventh and pick up the win for UC.
Game Two: 9-0 (5 Innings)
Neither team was able to record a run through the first two innings. In the top of the third, Wood singled and was able to advance to third following a stolen base and a Jasper single. Cheeseman laid down a perfect bunt to score Wood from third and give the Patriots the first run of the game.
In the fourth, a pair of UC hits put Malone on third base. Malone was able to score on a single to short by Wood. A couple errors on the RedHawks allowed the Patriots to add two more runs in the inning and take a 4-0 lead into the fifth.
In the top of the fifth, with two runners on for Cumberlands, Huber launched an absolute rocket over the fence in center field to give the Patriots a 7-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Malone found the plate again after
Jenna Howell put the ball into play, ending up as a fielder's choice.
Madison Mills would pinch hit for Cheeseman and secure an RBI single as Wood crossed the plate for the Patriots. UC finished the top half of the inning up 9-0, meaning they only needed to stop the RedHawks in the bottom of the fifth and the game would end.
Burgess, who had been dealing all game long, was able to shut down the RedHawks offense and secure the win for UC.
The Patriots will be back on the field on Friday March 19, as they face Freed-Hardeman University in a Mid-South Conference double-header. Game one will start at 4 PM with Game two beginning at 6 PM. Live stats can be found
