Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Despite A Fiery First Set Win, The Patriots Women's Volley Team Falls In Four Sets To Tigers.

Williamsburg, KY –  Despite the Patriots winning the first set against the Tigers at 25-21, they would go on to drop the next three sets (21-25, 19-25, 20-25) for the 1-3 loss on Saturday afternoon. Following the loss, the Patriots fall 3-9 overall and 2-6 in MSC play.

For the fifth match in a row, Lily Chapman would lead all UC hitters as she posted 18 kills to go along with her 18 digs and two service aces. Savanah Schwarz would have another huge game for Cumberlands as she tallied 45 assists with 17 digs, while Emily Prewitt contributed 12 kills and one block.

UC got out to a red hot start in the first set as they posted a 4-1 run highlighted by a Chapman kill to have the Tigers trailing early. Prewitt would continue the offense pressure on the Tigers as she connected with a Schwarz assist for the kill and put the Patriots up at 7-5. The two teams would continue to trade points for the remainder of the set until Chapman would hammer a kill through the defense to retain the Cumberlands lead at 16-15. A few possessions later, Danielle Jackson and Schwarz would snag back-to-back kills and extend the UC lead to 20-18. Prewitt would go on to close the first set out for the Patriots with another kill, which gave Cumberlands the first set win at 25-21 and the match lead at 1-0.

The Patriots would resume the battle through sets two and three, but unfortunately, would lose both of them at 21-25 and 19-25, which gave the Tigers the match lead at 2-1. However, UC would give the Tigers a run for their money in the fourth set. Once again, both teams traded points early on until Prewitt would be able to tie it up for Cumberlands with a monster kill to put the score at 8-8. Although, attacking errors would plague the Patriots later in the set they kept composure with a Chapman and Schwarz kill/assist combo to cut the Georgetown lead to 19-13. UC would roar back two possessions later as they embarked on a 4-0 run spearheaded by three consecutive Olivia Verdecchia kills to slash the Tigers lead to only 20-18. Nevertheless, the Tigers would end the fourth and final set with a 5-2 run to put the final score at 25-20, which allowed them to walk away with the 3-1 match win.

The Patriots will return to action on Thursday, March 18 to take on Pikeville University in Pikeville, KY. First serve is set for 7:00 PM.
