Lawrenceville, GA – Despite hard-fought battles throughout all of singles and doubles play, the #14 UC men's tennis team fell for the first time this season at 0-5 to #1 Georgia Gwinnett College on Monday afternoon. Following the loss, the Patriots move to 10-1 on the season.
The Grizzlies went on to control all of doubles play winning every match to that gave them the early 1-0 lead going into singles play.
To start singles play, Eric Banoub fell to Valentino Caratini at 1-6, 6-0, which had Georgia Gwinnett take the match lead at 2-0. Cumberlands continued to struggle going into the rest of singles play as Martin Muller dropped his #2 singles match against Matthias Haim at 0-6, 3-6, and extended the Grizzlies lead to 3-0. With his first loss of the season at the #1 singles spot, Martin Barbier lost his match against Alex Gurmendi at 6-3, 6-2, which ultimately decided the match at 4-0 in favor of Georgia Gwinnett. Nevertheless, the Patriots would continue to fight on as Mattis Le Montagner posted another solid performance at #4 singles, but it was not enough as he fell at 4-6, 1-6 to Jose Dugo, which allowed the Grizzlies to walk away with the 5-0 win. Luis Montull and Robert Wu Hung-Ju both went on to have unfinished matches in the #3 and #5 singles spots.
The Patriots will return to the court on Thursday, March 25 to take on Georgetown at the UC Tennis Complex in Williamsburg, KY. First serve is set for 3:00 PM.
