West Point, GA – The (RV) UC men's lacrosse team posted their largest margin of victory in program history, while tying the program record for goals in a quarter and in a game in the 26-2 win over Point Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Patriots improve to 3-4 on the season and 2-1 in AAC play.
Thomas Fogarty and
Dylan Crouch finished for the team lead with nine points apiece. Fogarty tallied a career-high with six goals and nine points in the game, while Crouch posted career-highs in goals (5), assist (4), and points (9). Fogarty becomes just the fourth Patriot in program history to net at least six goals in a game, while the duo of Fogarty and Crouch are tied for third most points in the program's six year history.
Dawson Coltran chipped in four goals, while
Tanner Popovich tallied a pair of goals to go along with a pair of assists.
Jayvon Jamison went 14-18 on faceoffs and scooped a game-high nine ground balls as
Jake Morgan tallied eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Michael Toohey played the first half and made a pair of saves to earn the win.
Jamison won the first four faceoffs off the game as the Patriots converted each of them into goals. Fogarty, Coltran,
Matthew Cessna, and Crouch were the recipients of those goals giving the Patriots a 4-0 lead with 11:30 remaining in the opening quarter. The score remained that way until midway through the first quarter as Morgan forced a Point turnover and on the ensuing possession Popovich but a well-placed shot into the net to extend the lead to 5-0. Crouch add another goal, while the Patriots defense force a pair of turnovers to give UC a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
Cumberlands dominance continued into the second quarter as the Patriots controlled the tempo and held the Skyhawks scoreless. Offensively, Fogarty scored or assisted UC's first four goals of the quarter giving the Patriots a 10-0 advantage. Cumberlands added a pair of goals, including a second from Cessna to extend their lead to 12-0 at the break.
Coming out of the break, the Patriots tied the program record of most goals in a quarter with 11 during the third period. The combination of Crouch and Fogarty either scored or assisted on the Patriots first six goals of the quarter extending the advantage to 18-0. Freshman
Noah Brandt was the recipient of a pair of Crouch's assists marking it his first two collegiate goals of his career. UC closed out the quarter out scoring Point 5-1 over the final seven minutes, which included a goal from Morgan, to give Cumberlands a 23-1 lead.
Alex Heckler got into the scoring column with a goal two minutes into the fourth quarter off an assist from Popovich. The two teams traded goals, before Popovich netted his second goal of the game for the 26-2 final.
This is the Patriots largest win in program history, as their previous largest win came against the Skyhawks on February 16, 2019 when they beat the Skyhawks 26-3.
Cumberlands will return to the field Tuesday, March 23, when they travel to Athens, TN to face eighth-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. with live video available
