Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | UC Athletics

Cumberlands Suffers First Loss of the Season to #9 Martin Methodist

Williamsburg, KY – #18 Cumberlands faced their highest ranked opponent in #9 Martin Methodist at the UC Soccer Complex. Despite taking more shots than the Redhawks, the Patriots lost the contest 4-1, suffering their first loss of the season.

Throughout the contest UC had a total of 24 shots, 11 of them on goal. The Redhawks did not even get off 11 shots in the game recording ten with eight on frame.

Cumberlands was putting the pressure on Martin Methodist early on earning a corner kick in the first four minutes of the game. However, nine minutes later the Redhawks were awarded a corner kick of their own. Martin Methodist sent the ball to the far side of the six-yard box and found a MMC attacker to put the ball in the back of the net to go up 1-0 from their first shot on frame of the game.

Six minutes later the Redhawks extended their lead from a penalty kick in the 18th minute. Laura Vogt dove to her right but the MMC forward shot the ball to the other side to give them the 2-0 advantage.

UC almost cut the deficit in half off the foot of Jayden Boelter in the 25th minute. Ainhoa Camara had a ball bounce to her close to the end line. She sent the ball back to an open Boelter who slotted the ball into the goal. Unfortunately, the goal was called off from an offside call.

Martin Methodist got another penalty kick in the 37th minute and earned the same result as the first one to take a 3-0 lead into half time. Vogt helped deter the Redhawks from adding any other goals with four saves. She had a big save from point blank in the 23' minute diving to the right.

The second half started out with an aggressive Patriots' offense. The UC attackers fired off five shots in the first ten minutes, but could not push any across the goal line. Through the entire final 45 minutes of the game Cumberlands had 17 shots compared to Martin's one shot. The Redhawks single shot was all they needed to put another goal away for a 4-0 lead.

With ten minutes left in the contest, Shara Randez sent a shot from 20 yards out and hit the crossbar for one of the best attempts of the game. Five minutes later in the 85th minute Cumberlands was issued a corner kick. Lena Larsen sent the ball in from the left side and found Camara on the far side of the box who tapped it in for the goal to be down 4-1.

UC was able to avoid the shutout loss but did suffer their first loss on home turf since 2017, snapping their 18-home win streak. This also marks the first time this season the Patriots conceded more than a goal in a game.

Cumberlands will return to the UC Soccer Complex for their next game against Bethel on Sunday, March 7 at 3 pm. The live stats for the game can be found here with the live video from the UC Sports Network found here.
