Williamsburg, KY – The UC women's volleyball team came out firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon as they swept their doubleheader against Thomas More University and Montreat College with a 3-1 and a 3-0 victory. Following the wins, the Patriots move to 6-9 overall and 4-6 MSC play.

In the first match of Saturday's doubleheader, UC went on to win their match against the Saints at 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 23-25, 25-21). Lily Chapman and Savanah Schwarz both posted career-highs as they led the way for the Patriots. Chapman was able to tally a total of 22 kills and 10 digs, while Schwarz contributed 53 assists and 10 digs. Emily Prewitt also had a big match for UC as she slammed through 15 kills to go along with one block.

At the start of the first set, everything was working offensively for Cumberlands as they hopped out to a quick 10-3 lead highlighted by a Prewitt kill. The Patriots continued this success later into the set as they were able to score three consecutive points featuring a kill from both Chapman and Danielle Jackson that extended their lead to 16-9. The rest of the first set was all Patriots as a kill from Olivia Verdecchia and a ball-handling error by the Saints ended the set with the score at 25-13, which gave UC the match lead at 1-0.

Cumberlands would go on to win the second set at 25-16 but drop the third set at 25-23, and have the match score sit at 2-1 in favor of the Patriots going into the fourth and final set. UC was down early at the start of the fourth, but would remain composed as they were able to battle back and tie the score up at 10-10 after Jackson hammered a kill through the Saints defense. The two teams would continue to trade points until Cumberlands was able to overtake the set lead at 17-15 with back-to-back points that were spearheaded by an Ervin kill. The Patriots would carry that momentum late into the fourth set as they would, once again, rally with kills from Jackson, Schwarz, and Chapman to take the fourth set at 25-21. With the match score sitting at 3-1, UC would be able to walk away with the win against the Saints and go up 1-0 on the day.

In the second and final match of Saturday's doubleheader against Montreat College, UC went on to dominate the Cavaliers 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-10) and stay perfect on the day. Prewitt and Chapman tied to lead all UC hitters with eight kills apiece, while Schwarz put up 26 assists, eight digs, and two service aces. Jennifer Stein also went on to contribute three service aces and 14 digs.

Similar to the first match, the Patriots started red-hot as they embarked on a 12-3 run as Jackson, Chapman, and Prewitt all smashed multiple kills through the Montreat defense. Attack errors would go on to plague most of the Cavaliers offense, which allowed Cumberlands to extend their lead even further to 20-9. UC would end the set with a 5-3 run that put them up at 1-0 for the match with the first set score sitting at 25-12.

To start the second set, the Patriots would go on a 3-0 run featured by a Jackson service ace. The two teams would continue to trade points until Schwarz was able to slam a kill through to enlarge the UC lead to 9-6. Chapman would be next up for Cumberlands as she connected with Schwarz for a kill that resumed the Patriots overwhelming offensive presence and put them up at 14-8. The rest of the second set was all UC as they finished with a 9-3 run to take the set at 25-11, and go up 2-0 on the match.

With perhaps their best set of the day, the Patriots hopped out to a fast 9-3 lead with three consecutive kills from Prewitt and Chapman. Two possessions later, UC would launch a 9-0 run after multiple Cavalier attack errors that stretched their lead to 19-5. Allyson Grava would make her presence known late into the third set as she racked up three consecutive kills that gave the Patriots the comfortable 24-9 lead. Following a service error by Montreat, Cumberlands was able to attain the third set win at 25-10, and the match shutout with the score sitting at 3-0.

The women's team will return to the court for their matchup against Freed-Hardeman University at the UC Volleyball complex on Tuesday, March 23 at 6:00 PM.
