Softball Drops Opening Games Against Georgetown

Georgetown, KY – The opening doubleheader between the (RV) Cumberlands Patriots and the Georgetown Tigers resulted in two victories for the Tigers. UC scored two runs in both contests falling 4-2 and 6-2 respectively.

Lindsey Shope and Talli Burgess led the pitching staff for the Patriots not conceding a run in their combined 5.2 innings of work. They also combined for four strikeouts, one walk and just two hits.

The UC offense recorded just four hits in both games with Corinne Haverland and Emily Bryant as the ones to have multi-hits on the day. Hailey Wood and Emily Jasper were able to steal a base in each game to increase their combined season total to 37.

GAME ONE: CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO GEORGETOWN: 4-2
Game one started off strong for the Patriots. Newly slotted as the leadoff batter, Wood, sent a ball to deep right field that the GC outfielder struggled to haul in resulting in Wood making it all the way to third base. With Wood just 60 feet away from home, Maddie Sickau laid down the perfect squeeze bunt to give UC the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

However, a half inning later the Tigers got on the board to overtake the lead. They plated two runs off three hits, two errors, and a walk.

Kaiti White then had back-to-back scoreless innings to keep the game at 2-1. The leadoff batter in the bottom of the fourth for the Tigers sent a home run to left field to extend their lead to 3-1. A sacrifice fly later in the inning pushed GC's lead to 4-1.

In as relief for the Patriots, Talli Burgess struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning which ignited the UC offense to pick up another run in the top of the sixth. After a walk, a stolen base, and a bunt from Jasper, Wood was once again on third base. Bryant sent a ball through the left side of the field scoring Wood and bringing the score to 4-2.

A three-up three down inning for the Patriots defense made sure the Tigers did not pick up anymore runs, however UC had just a lone single from Haverland in the top of the seventh inning giving them the 4-2 loss.

GAME TWO: TIGERS DEFEAT THE PATRIOTS: 6-2

Georgetown got their offense going in the second game with back-to-back innings of three runs and three hits to take the 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second. A quick inning on defense in the third carried momentum into the fourth for the Patriots.

Jasper led things off with a single up the middle and swiped second base before she advanced to third base on a batted ball. Sickau earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the score to 6-1.

Shope entered the game in the bottom of the fourth inning and stifled the Tigers from scoring another run in the contest. She gave up no hits, no walks and struck out one batter.

Cumberlands kickstarted their offense with another leadoff single in the top of the sixth, this time off the bat of Wood. She then stole her team best 20th stolen base of the season. Back-to-back batted balls in play moved Wood from second to home making the score 6-2. Neither team would plate a run in their final at-bat giving Georgetown the win.

Georgetown and Cumberlands will return to the diamond for their final two games of the series on Sunday, March 26. The first game will start at 1 PM with live stats found here and live video found here.
