Georgetown, KY – The UC women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought road matchup at 3-0 (25-23, 32-30, 25-20) against Georgetown College on Saturday afternoon. Following the loss, Cumberlands moves to 7-11 overall and 5-8 in MSC play.
Once again, Lily Chapman led from the outside as she snagged 11 kills, 12 digs, and two blocks. Savanah Schwarz also had a great match for UC as she put up 30 assists and four digs, while Danielle Jackson and Emily Prewitt both slammed down seven kills apiece.
To start the first set, both teams would go to trade points until Jackson was able to score back-to-back points for the Patriots with a pair of kills that made the score 3-3. UC continued the fight into the middle of the set as they would go on to overtake the lead at 12-9 with four consecutive points following a Chapman kill. Shelby Lackey was next up for the Patriots as she connected with a Schwarz assist for the kill that extended the Cumberlands lead to 16-13. Late in the first set, Jackson and Chapman would continue to keep the pressure on as they both hammered kills through the Tigers defense to give UC on continuous possessions that gave the Patriots the 23-20 lead. However, it would not be enough as Georgetown went on a 5-0 run to end the set at 25-23 and put the Tigers up at 1-0 for the match.
Cumberlands pushed the Tigers to the limit in the second set, but unfortunately, would drop the set with a score of 32-30, which had the Tigers up at 2-0 for the match score. Nevertheless, UC would keep the fight going in the third set. The Patriots hopped out to a quick 4-1 lead featured by a monster kill from Jackson. Although, three consecutive attack errors from Cumberlands would come into effect later on as it allowed the Tigers to take back the lead at 11-9. UC would not lie down though as they would go on a late 3-0 run that was spearheaded by a Kira Ervin service ace that cut the Tigers lead to 21-19. Similar to the first set, the Patriots effort was not enough as the Tigers ended the third set with a 4-1 run that gacve them the set win at 25-20. With the match score at 3-0, Georgetown was able to walk away with the win.
The Patriots will return to the court for their matchup against Shawnee State at the UC Volleyball Complex on Monday, March 29 at 6:00 PM.
