Columbia, KY – Attack errors plagued the UC women's volleyball team Thursday night as they went on to drop their second match in conference play against #15 Lindsey Wilson 0-3. Following the loss, the young Patriots team will move to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the MSC play.
Emily Prewitt had a solid game for Cumberlands as she tallied eight kills with one block. Savanah Schwarz continues to lead the team in assists as she notched 25 with 11 digs, while Allyson Grava contributed seven kills and nine digs.
The first set did not start well for the Patriots as the Blue Raiders opened with a 14-3 run until Schwarz and Prewitt were able to set up an assist for a kill connection that cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 14-4. Cumberlands continued to keep the pressure on with back-to-back points which included a Kira Irvin kill that minimized the Blue Raiders lead to 14-6. The Patriots would continue their strong defense as they, once again, got back-to-back points with blocks from Prewitt and Grava that put the score at 21-12 with UC trailing. However, it would not be enough as Cumberlands would go to lose the first set 25-13 to be trailing 0-1 on the match.
The Patriots dropped the second set 19-25 to go down 0-2 for the match score but showed some serious tenacity in the third set. Lily Chapman tied the score up on the second play of the set when she rose up to hammer a kill through the Blue Raiders defense to put the score at 1-1. Cumberlands would go on to keep applying pressure to Lindsey Wilson's defense as they scored six consecutive points, which were highlighted by a Prewitt kill and Schwarz service ace, to give them the 7-2 advantage. Danielle Jackson was next up for UC when she connected with Schwarz to get a kill of her own that still had the Patriots in the lead at 11-8. After a Cumberlands sub, Chapman would once again come up big for UC as she snagged a service that put the Patriots out front at 16-14. However, the rest of the set was all Blue Raiders as they were able to end the game on an 11-0 run which put the third set score at 16-25 and the match score at 0-3 with Lindsey Wilson taking the win.
UC will return to the court on Saturday, March 6 to take on Cumberland University in Lebanon, TN. First serve is at 4:30 PM.
