Lebanon, TN – The UC women's volleyball team fell to Cumberland University 0-3 (25-27, 17-25, 16-25) in a hard-fought three-set match on Saturday afternoon. Following the loss, the Patriots move to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in MSC play.
Lily Chapman was the big hitter today for Cumberlands as she tallied 12 kills to pair with 16 digs. Savanah Schwarz continues to lead the team, and the MSC, in assists, as she snagged 25 today with her six digs, and Danielle Jackson contributed six kills to go along with her two service aces.
The first set was a battle from the start between the Patriots and the Phoenix as UC was able to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead with a kill from Savanah Schwarz and an attack error by CU. The back-and-forth point fight continued until the Patriots were able to take the lead back from the Phoenix with three consecutive points featuring two kills from Chapman and a service ace by Jackson to take the 12-10 advantage. After a UC service error that gave the Phoenix the one-point lead, Allyson Grava was able to tie up the score at 15-15 with a monster kill of her own as she connected with a Schwarz assist. Cumberlands was able to find their groove late in the set with kills from Chapman and Schwarz, which sparked a 4-0 run to make the first set score 24-21 with UC in the lead. However, it would not be enough as the Phoenix ended the set with a 6-1 run to make the score 25-27 and have the Patriots down 0-1 on the match.
Cumberlands would go on to drop the second set 17-25, but showed grit in the third set. Jackson and Chapman would get things started for UC with a great block that tied the score up at 2-2. Although, attack errors would go on to cause problems for the Patriots as it allowed the Phoenix to take the 5-11 lead in the third set. Despite the deficit, Cumberlands continued to keep the pressure on CU with a 4-1 run spearheaded by an Emily Prewitt kill to make the score 16-22. Nevertheless, the UC effort was not enough as the Phoenix would end the third and final set with a 3-0 run to put the set score at 16-25 and the match score at 0-3.
UC will return to the court on Monday, March 8 to take on Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, OH. First serve is at 6:00 PM.
