Patriots Men's Tennis Win Streak Extends To Seven Following Victory Against Knights

Williamsburg, KY – In their hardest test of the year so far, the #14 UC men's Patriots team was able to defeat #23 Marian University at 5-2 and remain perfect on the season at the UC Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon. Following the win, the Patriots now stay undefeated at 7-0 overall.

Keeping their six-match win streak alive, and also grabbing the only shutout of the day for the men's team, the #13 duo of Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub beat Diogo Jesus and Camilo Mesa 6-0 in the #1 doubles match. The Patriots would drop the #2 match at 7-5, but were able to grab the doubles point as Martin Muller and Robert Wu Hung-Ju defeated Armando Lopez and Greg Fulling at 6-4 to snag the doubles point. Cumberlands would have the early 1-0 lead going into singles play.

Starting off #1 singles play was Barbier, who in his usual fashion, won his match in just two sets against Mesa at 6-3, 6-4 to put UC up 2-0 on the match. Luis Montull suffered his first singles loss of the year at the #2 spot against Hunter Sylvester at 7-5, 6-4, which cut the Patriots lead to just 2-1. Muller was up next for UC at the #3 singles spot as he dominated Diogo Jesus 6-2, 6-1 to give Cumberlands the 3-1 advantage. Banoub suffered a loss as well when he went down in three sets to Dmitrii Voshchenkov 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, and had the Patriots leading at only 3-2 going into the last two singles matches. In the most important matches of the day, the #5 and #6 singles spots held by Mattis Le Montagner and Wu Hung-Ju both posted three-set wins against Armando Lopez and Greg Fulling at 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. With those two key singles points in-hand, the Patriots grabbed the match win at 5-2

The men's team will return to the court on Wednesday, March 10 as they will face Campbellsville University. The match will take place in Campbellsville, KY with the first serve taking place at 1:30 PM.
