Williamsburg, KY – With their second shutout of the year, the #24 UC women's defeated Marian University 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UC Tennis Complex. Following the win, the Patriots now move to 6-1 overall for the season.
Sweeping all of doubles play, Cumberlands started the day with something to prove. First up for UC was the duo of Tomomi Nagao and Mikaela Fros, who remain undefeated at 7-0 in #1 doubles, as they defeated Teodora Simion and Laura Kuebler at 6-1. Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani were next at the #2 doubles spot when they beat Katharina Bopst and Sarah Wittenbaum 6-2. To complete the doubles sweep, Tessa Gray and Laura Marie won their #3 doubles match against Liza Lewis and Payton Haygood 6-4. After winning all three doubles matches, the Patriots earned the 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Cumberlands continued their dominance at the start of singles plays as Nagao grabbed the #1 singles victory at 6-1, 6-3 against Bopst to give UC the 2-0 lead. Fros and Marie would continue the Patriots hot-streak as they both won their #2 and #3 singles matches against Betija Dusele and Simion at 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-2 respectively. With the match score already sitting at 4-0, Hana Shimeno had a three-set battle against Kuebler in the #4 singles spot but was able to notch one in the win column as she won with the set scores at 3-6, 6-0, 10-8. To complete the match shutout for the Patriots, Beckmann and Mitani bested Wittenbaum and Lewis at the #5 and #6 singles spots with set scores at 6-1, 6-3, and 6-1, 6-3. Following the doubles and singles sweeps, UC trotted away with the 7-0 victory.
The women's team will return to the court on Wednesday, March 10 as they will face Campbellsville University. The match will take place in Campbellsville, KY with the first serve taking place at 1:30 PM.
