Williamsburg, KY – With their last win against the Blue Raiders dating back to over a decade, the #17 UC women's tennis team was able to snap a 20 match losing streak against #16 Lindsey Wilson with a 5-2 victory Thursday night at the UC Tennis Court. Following the victory, the Patriots move to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in MSC play.
To start doubles play, Tessa Gray and Laura Marie got things going in the #3 spot with a commanding 6-1 win over Parisa Rachdanone and Carla Alibert. Continuing with the momentum, while also snagging the doubles point, Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani defeated Reshma Challarapu and Salome Sposetti at 6-2. Unfortunately, the Patriots dropped the #1 doubles match but was still able to take the 1-0 match lead heading into singles play.
The Patriots top three singles all dropped their first sets, however, rallied to force a decisive third set. Mikaela Fros started singles play in the #2 spot for Cumberlands with a three-set battle against #36 Lucia Mora but would fall at 0-6, 6-3, 6-7, which tied the match score up at 1-1. However, #23 Tomomi Nagao would pick up the slack at #1 singles as she won her own three-set match against #21 Alexandra Parra at 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, and gave the Patriots the match lead again at 2-1. Marie would resume the hot streak in singles play at the #3 spot as she took down #39 Parisa Rachdanone at 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, and extended the UC lead to a comfortable 3-1.
Cumberlands would go on to drop the #4 singles match, which cut the UC lead to only 3-2. With the match still up in the air at this point, the #5 and #6 singles matches were absolutely crucial for a Patriots win. Nevertheless, the pressure was no issue for Mitani in the #6 singles spot as she ran through Carla Alibert in just two sets at 7-5, 6-3, which ultimately clinched the win for Cumberlands at 4-2. To close out singles play, Beckmann would add on to the UC win as she outlasted Salome Sposetti over three sets at 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. With four singles wins and the doubles point, the Patriots were able to walk away with the victory.
The Patriots will return to the court for their matchup against Pikeville at the UC Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 3 at 12:00 PM.
