Williamsburg, KY- The #17 UC women's tennis team was able to dominate the Pikeville Bears at 7-0, which is now their seventh shutout of the season. Following the win, the Patriots improve to 13-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in MSC play.
With their first win of the year at #1 doubles, Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani ran through Andrea Hurtado and Gabriela Guacanes at 6-2. With changes in doubles due to a forfeit, Tessa Gray and Laura Marie also moved up a spot to #2 doubles, but that did not stop them as they defeated Riley Mullins and Camila Agudelo at 6-2. With the doubles point in hand, Cumberlands held the 1-0 lead going into singles play.
UC kept their foot on the gas all throughout singles play with Marie being the first to finish at #3 singles as she snagged a commanding win against Guacanes with a score of 6-2, 6-0 that put the patriots up 2-0 on the match. Mikaela Fros and Tomomi Nagao would go on to switch spots for #1 and #2 singles as Fros shutout Agudelo in the #1 match with a score of 6-0, 6-0, which was followed by Nagao defeating Hurtado in the #2 match at 6-2. With the match already won at 4-0, Hana Shimeno and Beckmann added on to Cumberlands win as they both won in two sets in the #4 and #5 singles matches to take the 6-0 lead. Completing the match shutout was Mitani as she won by forfeit to put the score at 7-0 that allowed UC to walk away with the win.
The Patriots will return to the court against #11 Union College at the UC Tennis Complex on Monday, April 5. The first serve is set for 2:00 PM.
