Owensboro, KY – The #15 UC women's tennis completed a 4-0 sweep over the Martin Methodist Redhawks with the doubles point and three singles wins on Friday afternoon for the second round of the MSC Tournament. Following the win at Centre Court, the Patriots improve to 18-2 overall.
Cumberland would go on to drop the #1 doubles match, but was able to snag the doubles point with commanding performances in the #2 and #3 spots. Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani notched a hard-fought win at 6-4 in the #2 doubles match, while Tessa Gray and Laura Marie shut out their opponents at 6-0 to secure the doubles point. With the early 1-0 lead over the Redhawks, UC carried the momentum into singles play.
The first to finish in singles play was Beckmann in the #5 spot as she won her match in two sets at 6-0, 6-0, which put the Patriots up at 2-0. Marie would resume the stellar play for Cumberlands as she defeated Abbey Rumble at 6-1, 6-0, and extended the UC lead to 3-0. Ultimately winning the match for the Patriots at 4-0 was Mitani, as she ran through Soriano at 6-0, 6-2. Cumberlands would go on to leave the #1, #2, and #4 matches unfinished as they had already clinched the match win at 4-0.
The Patriots return to the court tomorrow on Saturday, April 17 as they will face the winner of Georgetown/Cumberland at 10:00 A.M. in Owensboro, KY.
