Campbellsville, KY – A 12-4 run-rule victory over the 12
th ranked Campbellsville Tigers sealed the series win for the Patriots who took games one and two yesterday. Campbellsville won the final game of the series 4-2 to avoid the sweep. This marks the first time since 2004, that the Patriots claimed the series win over the Tigers.
Across the four games, UC outscored CU 25-12. The 12 runs Cumberlands scored in game three of the series is the most runs that Campbellsville has given up in a game this year.
For the first time in her career,
Maddie Sickau blasted two home runs in the same game. The pair of homers gives her 10 on the season, tying her for second most in a single season in the program's history.
Katie Cheeseman had an impressive showing at the plate against the Tigers. To a team that only averages 4.08 runs against per game Cheeseman alone had eight RBIs across the four games.
The UC pitching staff was practically unhittable to one of the most potent offenses in the conference. Campbellsville averages 6.69 runs per game, but in the four-game series they were held to three runs per game.
Kaiti White led the pitching staff with 10 strikeouts across her 11.1 innings pitched.
GAME THREE: CUMBERLANDS RUN-RULES CAMPBELLSVILLE, 12-4
In what would become Campbellsville's first run-rule loss since their season opener in 2018, Cumberlands put up 12 runs off 13 hits. UC opened the scoring in the first inning off Sickau's first home run of the game, she sent a ball over the left field fence on a 1-2 count.
Then the floodgates opened up for the Patriots' offense in the second inning.
Meryn Livingston had a lead off single and then the very next pitch
Madison Huber was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Emily Jasper recorded a single to make the bases loaded. With one away, Cheeseman sent a ball to centerfield that cleared the bases pushing the score to 4-0. The Patriots were not done yet. Making it home runs in back-to-back innings, Sickau launched the ball once again over the left field fence to extend the lead to 6-0.
White and the defense got it done in the next half inning with a three-up three-down inning, finished off by a 5-4-2 double play. The Patriots returned to the plate in the top of the third to put up five runs again in a half inning. Huber led off with a walk and scored from a double off the bat of
Acacia Gray. Jasper scored Gray with an RBI single and then after
Hailey Wood laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Jasper, Cheeseman singled to center for her fourth RBI of the game.
Emily Bryant joined the hit parade with a double to left field to pick up two more runs for the Pats, making the score 11-0.
Not finished yet, UC plated one more run in the fourth inning off back-to-back singles from Jasper and Wood. Before Jasper scored, she swiped her 20
th base of the season. She now has a career total of 58 for third all-time.
Campbellsville would score four runs in the fourth and fifth innings. But it was not enough as the Patriots had the eight-run advantage earning the 12-4 run-rule win.
Kaci Goedde came into the game in the fifth inning getting the final two outs, one of which was a strikeout looking.
GAME FOUR: THE TIGERS BEAT THE PATRIOTS, 4-2
Cumberlands continued their trend and scored in the first inning, which means they scored in the first top half in all four games against Campbellsville. On the very first pitch of the game, Wood sent a ball to center field for a double. She advanced to third off a wild pitch and Sickau once again got the first inning RBI, this time off a sacrifice fly to right field for the 1-0 Patriots lead.
Talli Burgess recorded three strikeouts through the first two innings, but Campbellsville had a two-run home run in the second to take the lead. Burgess recorded two more strikeouts in the game, but the Tigers got another home run in the fourth to go ahead 3-1. An RBI single in the fifth made the score 4-1 in favor of Campbellsville.
In the top of the seventh inning, Huber hit her second home run of the year, but UC could not push across any more runs, falling 4-2.
The three wins secured the series win for UC, marking their second MSC series win of the season. Before today, Campbellsville had not lost a four games MSC series since 2017, when Lindsey Wilson took three of four. The Tigers also had not lost three consecutive games since 2017.
